Will I gain any leg room if I remove the gas tank?
Has anyone gained any leg room by either removing the gas tank behind the seat or changing the style of the seat...or is it a combination of doing both?
I love my truck (72 c10) but my knees are jammed against the dash and I am only 6' tall. Anyone know of a thread I could look at as trying to research one on here is not yielding much success. Thanks ahead of time for any help. |

The top part of the seat back touches the back of the cab with seat all the way back and the tank still there

Re: Will I gain any leg room if I remove the gas tank?
The bench in my 70 doesn't lean forward and I can slide it until the top of the seat touches the back of the cab.
Gas tank doesn't interfere with my stock bench. So if I needed more legroom I would almost certainly need to change my seat and evaluate the gas tank for interference at that point. What's your current setup like? |

I gained leg room by installing a 98 chevy truck seat. The back is not as thick as the original so you sit farther back.

Start by removing the front seat bolts and sliding a 3/4" spacer ( temp) just to see if changing the seat angle will help ? You can also move your steering wheel forward to gain additional space

Re: Will I gain any leg room if I remove the gas tank?
A fried of mine, a guy with a rather large beer gut (to put it mildly) drove my truck a short distance, and couldn't believe that he could not move the seat back any further. For him, the truck was a tight squeeze, and it's totally stock.
That's just the way they were built 50 years ago.

Re: Will I gain any leg room if I remove the gas tank?
Yeah, just look at WWI and WWII uniforms in museums (granted, a lot of those soldiers were 18-20 years olds). I'm only 5'8, 180 lbs and I feel tall in my truck and look like a giant next to most of the old war uniforms. The average height of a US male 100 years ago was 5'7, today it's 5'10.
To answer your question, as stated above, the seat will go all the way back to the cab wall with the tank in place. You can gain room as mentioned above with a more modern/thinner seat. You can also gain more room with the modern seats by removing the tank and sitting with the seat further back and "straighter up." Yes, we're all much larger overall than even I remember people being 30 years ago when I was growing up. It sounds bad, but we used to make fun of the few fat kids in our class... I went to my youngest sister's graduation a couple years ago and I'd say most of the kids were on the plus side People mistake me for being much younger than I am, most likely because I'm somewhat thin still. If I wear sunglasses so you can't see my eye wrinkles I've had people think I was in my 20's (36 now)

You can remove the tank and and modify the rear window surround like ebfabman did in this post and gain about 3 inches...

Re: Will I gain any leg room if I remove the gas tank?
I'm lucky because I'm 6'2" but all my height is in my torso. Your height must be in your legs because my '71 with stock bench and tank fit me fine! The wheel is a little close but I have a smaller Grant steering wheel. In human factors design class we measured ourselves and I had a buddy the same height that had 4" longer legs and I had a 4" longer torso, probably why I outweighed him even though we had the same build at 215 to 205 lbs.
