Looks like a great start, I am a sucker for raw metal bodys. Do you have a shot of the bed floor? What did you use for grinding off the paint?

Arrow Re: getting started on my 67 bed

the floor had surface rusted and was sandblasted , I just painted it and am gonna just leave it alone as it will let me use this truck as a truck and haul thing's ,
and as for striping paint 36 grit on a 6'' disc for a drill is the only way to go !!

Wavy? How about a textured surface.

Re: getting started on my 67 bed

If he used this same method of stripping the paint as he did with the front of the truck. Then he knows what hes doing. The pics i saw of the front half of the truck was arrow straight with a killer shine.

36 grit to strip a car/truck body is perfectly normal , bodywork is not done with 1000 grit , it leave's the metal clean and with a good base for your first coat of primer to grip , it's just part of it ,

Re: getting started on my 67 bed

I love bare metal, that steel is honest American! It's looking great. 36 is fine. Save your energy for more of that beautiful color sanding that you do. You are lucky to have a shop to work in.

One freak California rainshowers in late May was especially depressing for me.

Re: getting started on my 67 bed

Did you paint the truck yourself? If so plz share info on your techniques, materials, tools.

I noticed the can of black Rustoleum...did you use the roller method?

the rustoleum is on the bed floor and I just thinned it with laquer thinner and sprayed it ,
as for the did I paint the truck YES I did and am continuing to paint it ,
my method's and tool's are simple
1ST strip to metal with 36 grit 6'' disc
2ND fix any rust big dent's weld cut grind whatever
3RD lay the bondo to it !!
4TH start blocking with 2K primer
5TH continue blocking
6TH block it some more
7TH block it
8TH after you can't find anything else block it !
9TH paint it
10th block the clear starting with 600 then 1000 then 1500
11TH buff it !
12TH RIDE IT !

thanks for sharing that info

i think you should just lay some clear over the bare metal and bolt it up and leave it

Re: getting started on my 67 bed

Did you use the polyester or feather fill type primer between blocking? What grit did you use on those? Wish I woulda used a few more gallons of that with maybe an 80 grit between.

Arrow Re: getting started on my 67 bed

joe here is my step's
I prime with 2K high build primer and sand it with a air file straight sander with 40 grit the first time this is just for getting it straight , then prime it again and sand it with straight line air sander 80 grit , then prime it again and I use a block that was homemade out of a piece of coal mine belt scrapper it's pure polyurethane and will band around corner's or stay flat , I sand will my homemade block for a long while with the 80 grit and then I move to a paint stick with 180 then 220 and finally 320 , after I get it blocked with a paint stick and 320 and it feel's right (YOUR EYE'S ARE OF NO USE FOR BODYWORK) I paint my base then sand it with some 600 or 1000 then clear ,

Re: getting started on my 67 bed

Great information for folks doin' painting. I also found that the courser grits are the best for getting things straight. I did not spend the effort that you have with multiple coats of high-build and it definitely shows up now that my paint has completely shrunk. I also was afraid to sand and buff the clear coat since it stays outside 365 days a year and thought that might open up the paint and require more maintenance. I found that I pretty much suck at body work, but I am really great at making big piles of bondo dust!

Now I forget that my old truck is underneath that paint.

I like the character of your truck and look forwrd to see it finished. Keep it up!

Re: getting started on my 67 bed

Me personally, I use a 3M Roloc "black" strip disc to strip my vehicles so I do not put so many deep cuts in the metal. It also keeps the heat down better for less warpage.
