best places to find LS Motor?
ok guys, no thanks to Bobs darn "Fred" post and others....looks like i got the bug too now, so i put up my dearly beloved softail for sale..soo..i've been spending the last few days reading on ls1tech, ls1truck, here, etc...
which places have you all personally dealt with and had good experience with buying LS motor/trans, and they actually came through with everything needed without a hitch? i can always google junk yards, and call and send a ton of money to strangers across the country, but i'd much rather stick to a place that some of you have personally dealt with on here (point me in the right direction guys?) thanks

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
Local late model yard near me has more of those motors than any other motor in there. Not sure what they are, but probly all of them are cover, 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 and maybe a 8.1. I know they have a lot of them, and don't think they were that expensive. I don't want to check price, then I'll probly want one....

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
a person might check with insurance auctions. A person might be able to buy a whole low mileage truck from them for the cost of a pulled and shipped engine.

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
If you know anyone with a salvage auto license , ask them to check the auctions for you . A friend bought a badly wrecked 09 CTSV at a bargain price . Car was destroyed but the 6.2 superchaged engine looks intact . Not bad for $650 .

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
OOOH heck, we have another one starting. Wont be long we'll have to dedicate a whole section th LS powered trucks I believe Bob (Glock)and Dennis (Menace121978) both bought their engines from the same place. From what I heard they were great to deal with. I'm sure one of them will chime in soon. I got lucky and found one through a local guy who just wanted to unload the truck. But, definately seems like tons of them are popping up in the yards left and right. Good luck and I hope to see a LS engine in that thing soon! If I can do anything to help let me know.

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
It took me a bit but both Bob & Dennis got their LS motors from Larry at GM Specialized Parts Planet (rancho recyclers) Sorry, I pulled that right out of Dennis' build thread. Their website.

I found plenty of engines on the car-parts.com website. You might want to try that one.

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
Could be just me but I think this is one of the times isnt always better. I think a LQ9 6.0 would be a much better choice. Maybe the 8.1 for a tow righ though. Just my .02

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
yes... i highly recommend dealing with Larry over there. Awesome guy that puts these motors in his projects as well. 1-800-722-6015
quick example... the trans i got came out of a different yard(wanted it for the low miles) thats owned by them... well the dipstick tube was the wrong style(short one) and the dipstick was missing. i called him yesterday and he called GM and ordered a new one. i need the block off plate for the intake smog stuff... he pulled one off and is holding it for me. i needed returnless fuel rail... he pulled one with 10k miles from a newer truck with injectors and gave it to me. i needed a passengerside exhaust manifold w/o the smog pipe... he pulled one and had it waiting for me. i check in with him every month and tell him the progress(if any) and turns out he found my thread here and sends people to Bob's and my thread if they have questions he cant answer. i check in for the warranty... 6 months from the day she's on the road! i just have to bring her by when i'm done and he'll start the warranty! great place man! Just dont deal with a guy named Rodger there(internet guy). he's a tick!

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
Here are a few Engine sources to look at. I only have experience with Spaulding Automotive. I will elaborate more when I finally start my build thread.
SPAULDING AUTO Here is a you tube link from one of their ads Spaulding auto ready to run package A couple people have bought from these guys Schram auto Pacific fab also does pull out and ready to run packages they also have a pretty cool 4X4 Ls crossmember I'll talk about later Pacific Fab Another vender that seems to have happy customers? TNScrambler And last but not least car part.com Car Part.com These are all just a reference, buyer beware and I am not recomending anyone at the moment. Ask questions, try local and good luck there are deal out there

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
Here's a heads up for those contemplating a LS1 transplant. Nearly every PickNPull and similar sites I've visited in past months have such motors sitting on a pallet for sale. However every engine I've looked at has the wiring harness snipped for the convenience of the puller and the computer is nowhere in sight. Therefore if you're going to use the motor in the FI mode, you'll have to either find or purchase a harness (for 100's of $) and find the correct computer.
If you can, I'd suggest getting a wrecked truck/car and then you'll have everything needed for the transplant. Then sell unneeded pieces to recover some of your initial costs. Last edited by dan76; 01-30-2010 at 03:27 PM. |

Re: best places to find LS Motor?
A 5.3 would be plenty power. But you could be a little different and get a BIG power boost and run a magna-charger on it. Or do what I would love...STS rear mount turbo.
