2/4 drop - what wheels?

Doing a 2/4 drop on a 69 SWB fleetside. Want to know what wheels look best with this drop. What's the best offset, backspacing, and diameter? Pics anyone?

What would look best is a 4/6 drop!

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

IMHO I think a 3 1/2 front ( 2 1/2 dropped spindle with 1 inch drop spring ) and 5 inch rear drop ( spring with adjustable panhard bar and lowered shocks) with 15 x 8 rallys on 255/70R15's on all 4 corners. My personal preference is a level truck ( which this drop would do ) and the same size tires on all 4 corners.

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

So, back to my 2/4 drop...

The reason is that my truck will see some on-track use, so I will need some suspension travel. As well, I will use it to haul loads and tow. So, again, it will need some travel.

Having said that, I'd like to figure out what will tuck and fill up the wheel wells nicely. I am starting on the rolling chassis in the next week or two.

That all depends on what you like. Personally, I wouldn't run anything bigger than a 17" wheel with that drop so things stay proportioned. Usually larger wheels with only a mild drop like that tend to look 4WD'ish, if you know what I mean.

A great look with a 2/4 drop isa set if 15x8s all around with 235/70/15 front tires and 255/70/15 rear tires.

With a 2/4 you can go with 18's and have a good amount of side wall.

I wanted a real sleeper. A truck that at first glance looked stock. Stock ride height, fairly quiet exhaust but really flashy paint...you know the sort of truck that's all show and no go but would really stick in the twisties and go like stink in the straights. So, 3.5 x 5 in drop, ECE sway bar huge discs with 17x8 in wheels in front, 17x10 's in the rear with a classic industries sway bar in the rear. Exhaust out under the bumper, all emblems shaved and a monster big block up front. 4.10 gears and an overdrive too. Oh Yeah!

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

It's not so much the 'look' that I'm chasing. This truck will end up looking like a Foose or Phillips design, simply because of the function. It's going to be low for occasional track day use, not necessarily for looks. It'll have big brakes, Hotchkis suspension, etc. Big block, fuel injected, LSD, etc. Mainly, I am looking for what fits from a tire perspective, so i don't have to monkey around once I get started on this thing. I'm thinking I'll do 18's, simply because of the choices of track tires available to me. Probably 18x8.5 and 18x10 setup.

Any thoughts on offset, backspacing, etc? I like to see a wheel profile that is set back just shy of the fender lip.

Exactly what kind of "track day" use are you thinking? If it's autocross, then a 2/4 drop isn't going to be low enough to get your COG low enough to be competetive. In other words, you will still be top heavy.

As for wheels, an 18x8 with 4"-4.75" backspace will work, and depending on which rearend you have, an 18x10 with 4.25" bs(early narrower rear) or 4.75"-5" bs(71-72 rearend). For tires, a 255/45/18 front and 295/45/18 rear is a good range to start looking.

I like 17s that way you can still put a tire with some sidewall on them.

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

Air bags.... then you can have all of these drops.

As for the wheels, it really depends on the style and look your after. Do you want to keep it original looking, more modern large diameters or something in the middle?

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

air bags are awesome, but if your going to be traveling and towing. stick with a static drop(springs/shocks). theyre more reliable as to if an airbag blows and your stranded on the shoulder where your pretty much screwed.

68 step put down almost what I did.Except that I did a 2 1/2 front drop so I could use a disc kit.I went with Rallies and 235-70/15 front and 255-70/15 rear.My comp with pics is down or I would post one.

Hi, sweet truck BTW, wanted to ask, what 2.5 drop spindles are you running up front? CPP or ECE, and any rubbing issues. Thanks.

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

@68Stepbed - Thanks for the info on backspacing. That's really what I am looking for. I want a nice side profile on the truck, where the tires barely tuck under the fenders. As for track days, it'll tow my track car and then I'll just take it on track for an occasional run. No autocross. All road course stuff. Mid-Ohio and such.

Anyone using later model wheels on a 6-lug? I'm looking at a set of Denali takeoffs.

Re: 2/4 drop - what wheels?

I have a 3/4 drop kit on the way. I will be running these torque thrust d's . Rear wheel is 18x10 and 4.5" back space with 305/45/18 tires. Fronts are 18x8 and 4" back space with 245/40/18 tires.they don't rub now and should be fine with the drop as well.
