Shift detent
My column shift TH350 has a very slopppy feel when going from reverse to neutral to Dr 1 or 2 . It stays in gear, but you have to feel for the slot to put the lever in. I think that there should be a positive detent when you select a gear with the shift lever. Is something worn in my steering column or in the trans ? Is this an "easy" fix or a big (Expensive) job.

Re: Shift detent
There is a spring in the trans that rides on the rooster comb. I have seen these break before. Pretty easy fix, just need to drop the pan and remove one bolt.

Re: Shift detent
It could be the spring that 70 net440 has described to you, but I suspect worn out, or incomplete shift linkage seeing how you can feel the transmission detents. I would check the linkage parts for grooves and slots before I dropped the pan. WES

Re: Shift detent
For a quick check, disconnect the linkage at the transmission end and rotate the transmission arm by hand. This will tell you in a hurry where the problem is.
