Okay.. So, I'll start a thread on here as I think this may be a little more helpful then then H.A.M.B. (Don't be me wrong, the HAMBer's are a great crowd but I think the 60-66 guys will be able to assist me more specifically with this project..)

(Short of the long story is I bought it from California--drove it back to my home while towing a '41 Ford Coupe behind--and then blew the head on it when I was hauling some lumber around my house--All during October 2011)

My plan is a basic rebuild-resto(which all stemmed from the cylinder head issue)--and upgrading of some simple stuff. I've found more rust on the body than I originally knew existed--but what else is new. I will be repainting it again in 2-tone, unsure exactly what color other than white (thinking original, teal, or seafoam green). I will lower it a little with simple springs and upgrade to disk brakes in the front and will convert to 5-lug axles. The interior will remain semi-spartan with the original seats-reupholstered (to include the passenger flip seat)-and I'm not sure if I'll leave the rear cargo area clear yet. I will be putting on a proper rear hitch. The wheels will be steel 15"ers with stocker type dog-dish hubcaps with the tall tires that I have on it now. I have recently acquired a very nice '65 C10 cab which will donate much of the sheetmetal--and I also got some NOS rocker panels with the purchase. I have thought of putting a '60-63 hood on the suburban--but unsure yet. I will be re-skinning the doors as well. There's quite a bit of work ahead of me.. And i'm looking forward to it.. Oh--and by the way, a 292 will power the truck once again still relying on the 4-speed trans (it got me from California to Chicago'ish just fine--I'll gladly do it again..) Here's all the pictures to date of the original acquisition..

So, Here are some questions..

1. Are the '64-66 Chevy C10's rear axles the same as the ones in the suburban's? I'm planning on ordering Early Classic's 5-Lug conversion kit, and some of their lowering springs for the front and rear. Looking for recommendations. This site is already proving very useful.

2. Good places for the interior materials, upholstery?

3. Anyone got some good correct dog dish hubcaps?

..I'll be using this site for tips on the sheetmetal repair..

Welcome! Looks like you've made quite a bit of progress over the last few months. If you are looking for factory correct auto fabric, you can use SMS auto fabrics out of Portland, OR. Pricey but 100% correct.

There isn't a whole lot available for suburbans out there right now. Only the stuff that would interchange with the trucks will you find available. But their are other members on here that have great resources and ideas how to get around all of that.

Welcome to the forum

Yes the differentials are the same between the pickups and the Suburbans. In fact the truck 12 bolt was used from '63-'82 in the C10's, and thru '79-'80 in the K10's and K5's. With yours being a '65, you will just need the conversion axles. The Suburban sits on a slightly modified short wheelbase pickup chassis and running gear.

Great... I ordered the 2/4 spring kit and conversion axles for the 12-bolt.. And CaptainFab-thank you for the link.. http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...=324309&page=3 has the pictures of the roof job.. I don't need the roof skin, but rather just the bottom side of the overhang.. And I'll also be replacing the upper portion of the drivers door opening.. So--I think the truck cab is gonna do the job.. I just ordered spot weld cutters yesterday--so I can start disassembling the truck cab soon..

I'm glad to see that the cab should work out. It's so fun to drive an old suburban around town. I swear I get more comments from people when I'm driving around in the beat up orange '66 sub than in my restored '66 pickup. Plus the extra room for passengers is great.

Well.. Nothing too exciting here.. I decided to rearrange the garage today and get the frame/chassis back in the garage.. I'm expecting the suspension bits to come this week.. And, I have lots of cleaning to get done on the rolling stuff...
There's not much to look at--but there's about 3 hours of breathing ground up metal dust and grinding disks in getting this damned farmer hitch off of the truck. In all honesty--the thing was welded on pretty damned good. I'll be opting for a legit Reese type hitch when it comes time for it. Here's the pics..

That truss will be coming off of there.. I'm guessing that was another rancher "fix" due to the rough terrain this thing lived in.. It's very poorly attached to the axle.. I'll be removing it this week..

Here are some of the earlier pictures of disassembly. These were on another memory card which I had forgotten about.

Here you can see the cylinder head that came off of the 292. There were dozens of cracks in between the valves and when initially taken off there were crystalized and wet areas around the cracks from coolant..

Well, here are my parts that arrived from Early Classic Enterprises today..

I've got a set of 2" front lowering springs, and 4" for the rear.. I'm worried however that the rear springs may sag a little too much with the weight of the suburban. Anyone experience this yet? I know CPP has an HD set of rear lowering springs... Am I going to have to swap them?? I just don't want this thing dragging it's tail.
I've got the rear shock re-locator and the adjustable panhard bar. Also all four new shocks and new rear axle bearings. I've got new axles inbound from a drop-ship location from ECE as well. I went ahead and got a set of fresh backing plates from ECE as the ones from the '71 C10 donor truck plates were shot.

I also spent some time cleaning up the really nasty parts of the frame.. This was primarily the trans crossmember and the second frame crossmember behind it. I notice the crossmember which has the parking brake assembly fixed is only bolted to the frame. I was pondering cutting out the rivets on the trans cross member and using some grade-8 hardware to remount it. Anyone have any thoughts on removing the rivets in favor of bolts? I was going to do this for ease of cleaning and removal of the trans in the future--should that be necessary. Anyone have any insight into this?

This nasty bellcrank setup for the clutch sucks-and I am pretty sure the frame mount is not supposed to be 'open', as it appears cracked.... Where can I get a replacement, or an upgrade??

I am nearly certain that the frame mount for the clutch "Z Bar" is supposed to be open like that. Mine is and it allows you to drop the stud in after you've got the engine side one set. LMC Trucks sells rebuild parts for that system, and even has a really nice diagram of that area. I don't remember what you're planning on putting in engine-wise, but if it's a 6cyl, make sure to grab the engine side mount for the Z Bar. If it's a SBC, scrap that mount and buy the stud that screws into the SBC block in that same location. PM me if this isn't clear.

I did notice that when I finally removed it that the opening is supposed to be in that bracket.. I wasn't aware of that until I removed the bell-crank, or Z-Bar. I will be re-using the 292 during the restoration--and getting this piece put back together with a little less "wiggle" will be ideal. I'll check at LMC for the rebuild parts for certain. Thanks for the heads up..

I went ahead and ordered the HD rear 4" springs from CPP.. I'll be returning the other ones to ECE.. Oh well.

I spent some time cleaning up the forward part of the frame today in preparation for a hard pressure wash to get the rest of the stuff off. I just needed to get all the thick concrete-like dirt off which had been collecting for years. I started on the rear where all the rearend oil was being flung off of the pinion yoke while the seal was bad--apparently for years. I got a lot of it off and then doused it with some Purple Power cleaner..
I didn't take any pictures of the stuff as this is hardly interesting work.
I did remove the stock shocks and took off the bellcrank for the clutch. I now see why that slit is in the frame bracket--I think I'll have to find a new bell crank as there isn't much left of this one (kinda worn out). How many of you guys go to hydraulic clutches??
Oh well--more cleaning tomorrow.. I disassembled the entire heater box assembly on the engine compartment side. I have a friend with a blast box that will let me start saving money on doing that myself for the small stuff.
Gonna read a couple of the other threads on here--and call it a night.

This was primarily the trans crossmember and the second frame crossmember behind it. I notice the crossmember which has the parking brake assembly fixed is only bolted to the frame. I was pondering cutting out the rivets on the trans cross member and using some grade-8 hardware to remount it. Anyone have any thoughts on removing the rivets in favor of bolts? I was going to do this for ease of cleaning and removal of the trans in the future--should that be necessary. Anyone have any insight into this? before.... After... This nasty bellcrank setup for the clutch sucks-and I am pretty sure the frame mount is not supposed to be 'open', as it appears cracked.... Where can I get a replacement, or an upgrade?? Frame numbers....

I'll be returning the other ones to ECE.. Oh well. I spent some time cleaning up the forward part of the frame today in preparation for a hard pressure wash to get the rest of the stuff off. I just needed to get all the thick concrete-like dirt off which had been collecting for years. I started on the rear where all the rearend oil was being flung off of the pinion yoke while the seal was bad--apparently for years. I got a lot of it off and then doused it with some Purple Power cleaner.. I didn't take any pictures of the stuff as this is hardly interesting work. I did remove the stock shocks and took off the bellcrank for the clutch. I now see why that slit is in the frame bracket--I think I'll have to find a new bell crank as there isn't much left of this one (kinda worn out). How many of you guys go to hydraulic clutches?? Oh well--more cleaning tomorrow.. I disassembled the entire heater box assembly on the engine compartment side. I have a friend with a blast box that will let me start saving money on doing that myself for the small stuff. Gonna read a couple of the other threads on here--and call it a night.
