rear tire wanted to go faster than truck

On my way to work yesterday at 4:30 in the morning I'm doing 55 down the highway and suddenly instant sparkshow and rear driver tire (axle and all) decide it wants to get ahead of my truck.Hitch a ride home and steal the wifes car,after calling a tow truck.I was gone 3 days and come back to this(see pics)I'm wondering if the damage to the axle shaft is repairable or to try and scab one up from a junker.On top of it all my tire(1 week old) and axle,hubcap,brake drum are down a 150 foot embankment that I'm told ends at a big cliff.

This is a good opportunity to go to a 14 bolt rear. In Either case, This looks like it could be fixed, but would likely be easier to replace the whole axle assembly, whether you go original or newer axle.

Beautiful country up there! I think I would take a hike and find my new tire! Go with a used rearend from the bone yard!

I think I'd be hunting that tire down as well and find another rear axle assembly.

Wow, I bet that was some kind of a "wake-up!" Glad no one was hurt. Good Luck getting her fixed up and back on the road.

find somone with a winch and hook it to the tire. At least that way you won't have to carry it up the hill.

update on rear tire leaving

went back to where I thought the tire might be and after only 30 or so minutes found it only 200 hundred feet or so down the bank on the edge of a creek! My friend and I wrestled it up the hill in only 5 min.Looks like the tabs on the spacer to bend over the nut so it cant back off broke? wore off?It looks like it was moving around in there for awhile.I've been trying to bang the end of the axle back into round putting a chunk of wood on it 1st as not to **** up the threads.I'm pretty close to getting the nut back on......at least I think so.I've got a 1980 3\4 ton and maybe I should just be stealing the rear out of it?any advice out there?

When the tow truck driver came to get the money the next day he old my wife he almost lost it down the bank as it started rolling as he was hooking it up.I think in my haste to get out of there i forgot to put her in park.He told her he held on to it until he could get it down again.good thing my wife said he's a pretty big dude lol.

The arrow in the picture below will show why it came apart. There is supposed to be a tab (key) where that little bump is. That keeps the nuts from rotating. The "bend over" tab keeps the outer nut from loosening but not the whole assembly. It came off because the driver's side rotation naturally turns the nut left. It can probably be fixed with a new spindle, nut set and axle.

I'm with Dean on the D60 guess. My dad's 72 C20 decided to chuck the passenger's side axleshaft and wheel/tire assembly while he was motoring down the road. He left a 150ft long groove in the road. He said he watched the whole thing fly past his window, off the road and watched the axle shaft hit a tree and bounce off. Believe it or not the axleshaft was undamaged and the same D60 is still in the rear of the truck and working fine. Those are some tough axles!!!!
