Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

Last night i removed the egr and old quadrajet. Install went fine after that i went to hook up the throttle and now i have a problem with it wanting to start and run at 3000 revs. I have a 1985 c10 305/700r4. Do i need to buy something or how can i fix this. also the gas pedal is floppy and doing nothing. Please help i need it on the road by Monday.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

sounds like the throttle came unhooked somewhere, if the pedal is floppy. Just trace back until you find where it came apart. And double check your throttle return springs. I've done that swap a few times and it was a pretty easy, straighforward deal. It's something minor.

Also, unrelated to the throttle problem, but I've heard it's vitally important that the tv cable for the 700 trans is adjusted properly.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

I found where the throttle is not floppy now I have an issue running at 3000 revs at start and run. would excessive fuel pressure be to blame?

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

shouldnt be, you have a mechanical pump right? and it was working right before. I never had to change a pump when I switched q-jet to 1406. Maybe a vacuum problem, line hooked up wrong? Bad vacuum leak can cause high idle. Check that all your lines are either hooked up or plugged off. I think the Qs have more hookups than 1406s, so you should have to plug something off. Are you physically checking throttle position? Whats it doing? Make sure your throttle return springs are on right and pulling the throttle back to the stop at idle.

You need a plate and EGR gasket to cover the EGR port on the manifold. There is a huge vacuum leak. I'm surprised it started. Don't throw away your old carburator as I think you will be saving alot of heart ache if you put it back together stock.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

I'm making a block off plate as we speak and my quadrajet is pretty far gone. Its had 26 years and 500k mile put on it and a rebuild wouldn't cut it

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

So your truck only wants to run at 3k rpm or higher? If that's the case it sounds like a nasty vacuum leak like I had. Like stated above, make sure to make a plate to use for the egr valve, and also make sure you have plugged the vacuum ports that are located on the front of the intake manifold and one that's on the thermostat housing.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

Alright still can't find the leak this is frustrating me. nothing is coming from the egr both ports on the back are plugged or in use(two from using the adapter plate). There are three on the front one is hook up to the canister the other two to the transmission and dizzy. I use vise grips to close the hoses from the canister no luck. any other ideas? i got it down only slightly by blocking the egr.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

You must have a correct fit between the manifold and carburator. If you leaking from between there you will never get it to run correctley. Maybe your idle adjustment screws are too far lean? If all is good your carb may be plugged on the idle side. Is this a new carburator or used?

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

Look on the front of your intake manifold, there should be a vacuum port that screws into the intake manifold and then one that screws into the thermostat housing, if you took the vacuum lines off of those then you need to get pipe plugs from a parts store to screw into those. Did you use rtv on the plate that you used to block off the egr valve? Also, did you cap off any vacuum ports on the carb that you took lines off of? When you plug any vacuum lines, you need to use a cap or use a vacuum hose and put a screw in the end of it and take the screw.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

Do you have the stock spreadbore intake? If so did you use a square bore adapter like this? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2732/ You may have a vacuum leak at the carb base if not or your primary butterflys are stuck open in the stock spreadbore intake. The edelbrock primary butterflys are a little bigger then the quadrajets primarys.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

yep, check that adapter. I've seen them upside down. Pull the carb back off and start over. If your linkage and throttle is not stuck, then you have a huge leak. Stick with it, you'll get it. Once you do you'll be happy, the 1406 is a great replacement for the Q-jet. Q-jets are great when they're new, but the problem is they don't stay new, then they suck.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

Idle is down to normal but i lost brakes how do i fix this? yes i used the proper plate.
Also I lost my brakes but thats probably a side effect of a 25 year old vacuum line

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

did you hook up the power brake vac. line to the carb? is it new? is it tight and not thrown on? I was going to say the adapter plate for the old intakes, egr block off, and plug the vac. ports, because there is a threaded one in back and a nipple in front then 2 small nipples in front. I was going to also say you might need a stiffer return spring because ours did that once high idle and you could push the throttle lever on the side of the carb and make it idle down.

Plus the mixture screws in front and then the idle speed screw too.

I preffer edelbrock over anything. I've done 3 of them one vehicles, 2 of which were on stock quad intakes replacing quadrajets, the other was on an aftermarket intake.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

Ran it today and it runs like i got a bigger engine. Just gonna have to learn not to burn the tires. still don't have the power brakes. But i was told i used the wrong vacuum port i should haver used the one from the carburetor and blocked the one on the adapter.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

any full vac. port should be fine, does the one in the adapter even go into the middle some I've seen are not drilled all the way thru. I use the one on back of the carb, or you can use the one in front or one straight into the intake.

Post a picture of the linkage and booster hose. Did you install the TV cable angle correction bracket?

Didn't install the tv at all yet trying to find a good angle. I believe the one on the adapter wasn't drilled through.

DO NOT drive it without the tv hooked up and adjusted PROPERLY. The trans will fail within minutes.

Re: Problems installing Edelbrock 1406

The new carburetor has brought new life to my 305. Instead of gliding to a speed it rockets. Also if i want fuel economy turn some screws and i have it. I recommend the 1406 for replacing your worn quadrajet.
