Jimbo's 67 Long bed step side build

Hello everyone. My name is Jim, I'm 65, been retired for several years and like messing with cars and trucks (since I was 14). I have been posting on the 47-59 forum with the build of my roadster pickup, just finished wraping that one up. I'm now starting this post of a 67 long bed step side I redid for a friend of mine. I worked on it from 2005 till 2008 (not all the time, you know the drill). I wish I knew about this site then, it would have saved me alot of headaches. Anyhow it's been on the road for about 2-1/2 years. A little background on the pickup. It's been in Jimbo's family for about 38 years. His dad picked it up in 1973, and gave it to Jimbo in 1978. It was an original 6 cyl, 3 speed, long bed heavy half ton. It had been a work truck for many years. Jimbo had a built 327 installed, but keep the 3 spd. Then in 1983 he had it painted. Over the years it sat outside and slowly when down hill. That's where we got together and decided to bring it back to life. So follow along for the next several weeks while I post pictures and tell you a story about a truck called "OLD RED".

Pic 1 This is a picture Jimbo has in his basement.

Pic 2 A close up of the picture, this was the 2nd redo in 1983 with new paint, etc. That's where the name Old Red started.

Started removing stuff to see what I had to work with.

Found out the frame was cracked on the right side.

Can't wait to see the rest of this one. The final product looks great from the picture on your other thread. My dad has a longbed 67 stepside. You really don't see many of them redone. Thanks for posting!

Thanks Ben. A lot of people tried to talk him into making a short wide, but he wanted to keep it as built, he's had lots of people think we did something different...Jim

Today I will show some bed work and frame repair.

Removed the bed to see how to make repair to area where old spare tire mounted. Also removed old angle strips.

Here old wood has been removed and I'm checking location of holes needed in new wood. Longbed kit does not come with holes drilled.

This is your typical drum to disc brake change, but wanted to post the pics.

Pic 1 Old drum brakes.

Pic 2 Old brakes, arms, springs, etc. removed, with new 2-1/2" drop spindles and 1-1/2" drop coil springs.

Sorry so late posting, had things to go to.

While waiting for more parts, I started to remove the drip rail, cut off on the side first in short sections.

Then weld back together, and do the next section. This way I didn't let everything move around.

I like the way you work!!! You don't mess around and get right to it and get the job done! You even do the job really well.

I can't wait to see more progress on this.

Good job!
