Door Lock Cylinder question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The door lock cylinders on my truck have been painted over so I would like to but a new set. If I get new ones, does that mean they will have a separate key or is there a way to make my current key work? Thanks.

When you say "painted over" do you merely mean the PO left them in and sprayed paint over them, or were they removed and the holes filled? If it's the former- I'd just pop 'em out strip the paint off with some stripper and hit 'em with a "power-ball" to polish them back up. If you replace them I'm not sure you could get them re-keyed to fit your current key....if not you can always buy the the matched ignition lock cylinder and be back to having only one key.

Yes, You can have a new lock cylinder keyed to match the old one, a locksmith will be able to do it for you without a problem.
But I would think paint is not really a reason to buy a new lock, I would try the stripper method mentioned above first.

Since you are doing this why not get all new locks. They make kits that cover the doors and ignition switch with the glove box thrown in for good luck. Thats what I did and it works great. Just a thought. Cheers, Pat
