Saddle tanks
Scored a pair of saddle tanks for my 71 K20, my question is are all the saddle tanks the same or did they come different sizes? I was told that they were 67-72 but the holes don’t seem to match. Also, anyone know where I can get the long bolts? Thank you

Re: Saddle tanks
Pics and measurements would help with the ID of the tanks. Bolts can be made via threaded rod or threading a piece of tubing that will fit through the hole and using a carriage bolt on top. Pretty sure they are 7/16'' (been awhile since I did mine)

Re: Saddle tanks
Pics will help for sure. My old Travel Tanks are ~15 gallons each. Dunno about any others...

Re: Saddle tanks
My hardware is 3/8-16 all-thread. I cut the old bolts that had been on there for 50 years when I drained and dropped the tanks to get rid of the sludge that had been in them, unused for several years. They are 16 gallons each.

Re: Saddle tanks
generally speaking, saddle "tanks" will be a non-factory dealer or previous owner installed set-up; so, yes, there are different sizes and fill neck locations (at a minimum, there were long and short bed versions of aftermarket saddle tanks). I bought the long bed mounting bolts at home depot I believe. Factory setup is the single NL2 aux fuel tank with upper driver's bedside fill neck.
Which holes don't match up? The mounting holes (ie did your truck used to have saddle tanks and you have been searching for replacements?) or do you already have filler neck cutouts on your bed and they don't line up? Wheelwell filler necks are a (ok, my) preferred saddle tank setup, they disappear under the bed and there are no visible filler holes. What setup are you trying to install? If you don't have bed cutouts but your new tanks need them, you could modify your fill location to the wheelwell fill while the tanks are out if you wanted to. |

Re: Saddle tanks
Yes, that’s it! I bought a 71 K20 that had saddle tanks. So I found a pair to put on. But I notice the holes do not line p on existing bed holes. I could drill new holes but not sure if I will go that route. I will clean them up and see what happens. Not sure how to load pics yet. Trying to figure that out. So I will check Home Depot and see if they have the long bolts/rods I need. Thank you
