Do i need the kick down hooked up on my carb?
when i bought my truck, the throttle cable was not connected to the kick down on the carb. i tried hooking it up, and it wasn't adjusted properly, and I smelled alot of gas like I was flooding it so I just unhooked it and left it like it was. Is there any advantages or disadvantages to having it hooked up? should i leave it un hooked or try to properly adjust it and connect it?

You can manually downshift it so you dont need it hooked up. Basically all it does it downshifts it for you when you stomp on it. Some of the aftermarket rebuilt trans dont even have a kickdown hookup its blanked off.

if it is a Th350, then no, not really. It'll shorten the life a little, but not much.
If it is an overdrive, stop driving it now. They will die with only 10,000 miles if misadjusted... let alone removed all together. |

It has no effect on the carb tuning.

Good point I jumped to the assumption that it was a th350. We all know what happens when we assume.

Re: Do i need the kick down hooked up on my carb?
While its true that it won't affect the tuning if its out of adjustment and puts presure on the throtle plate and also the accelerater pump,it could cause it to flood or weep fuel. Another note if I remember right on a TH 350 when you manualy put it in 2nd it drives on the band instead of the drum and causes premature wear.I could be wrong. I worked at a transmision shop 19 or 20 years ago and even then I was only the installer. Not as hard as building them thats for sure,I took hundreds of those things apart for my boss but couldnt put one back together.Anyway thats what I think he told me once about 2nd gear, probably no big deal anyway if your not doing it every 5 minutes.

The kickdown is half the fun of driving an auto in these trucks, IMHO.
