Installing a head unit into a hacked dash

Over the weekend, I faced a situation that I would imagine is very common. I decided to replace the junk head unit that was in my truck when I bought it, only to discover that the dash had been hacked when that last head unit was installed.

Since I would imagine that a lot of people have encountered the same problem, I tossed some pictures and explanation up on my Sounddomain page. Hopefully it will give some others a few ideas for their own ride.

The cage is anchored to the metal dash board, and the head unit is locked into the cage just like in every other domestic install. If somebody wants the head unit badly enough, they will get it though. Fortunately, I'm in a very safe area, and since I don't do any sort of booming, I don't really draw any attention to myself.

Thats what I thought befor someone broke into my truck at 6:30 in the morning about a year ago. and the ony thing that kept them from steeling it was a strap that I bolted down to the dashbord. so I would sereously re-consider your decison. I though I lived in a simi safe area. and thought "who the heck would think to break into a fugly old red truck?" well they did and caused quite a bit of damage. so just a word from someone that had delt with that. all they really managed to steel were my speakers and the remote to my radio

I think I'll just get myself one of those radio delete plates, and when the time comes, cut that so I can get the size of the DIN perfect, rather than having that gap above and below like comes with the factory opening

There's really no way for me to do that. The shape of the head-unit cut-out would depend on the head unit you're using, and where/how it's mounted in your dash. Those trim plates are are just too application specific for me to make one without having the vehicle in front of me. Sorry.
