Re: Taking off the bed

unplug your taillights, remove rear bumper, disconnect fuel filler & vent hoses( there's also a ground on the filler neck), remove bed bolts. also make sure nobody has attached axle vent or muffler hangers to bottom of box,- good to go

Re: Taking off the bed

Sweet!!!! Well I figured the tail lights, I have an aftermarket exhaust and they welded it to the frame, and somehow I don't know how it's possible but my bumper is welded to the frame as well it's not the traditional chrome bumper it's a steel bumper, but I'll make sure to double check everything thanks so much dieseldawg142

Re: Taking off the bed

8wagon wheel bolts through frame. Had to take spare off mine to get to back 4 easier. My taillights were hardwired in, origionally there was a plug... I just cut em. But after that i drove around bedless waiting on a good one. The filler neck i popped out into the bed. There should be a ground strap from bed to frame check it as well. Good luck!!

Yeah I was going to try and take it off in pieces instead of a whole well it wasn't working that way so I'm going to have to take it off as a whole but oh well

Re: Taking off the bed

I put four eye bolts in my bed, mostly for tie downs, but they work to lift the bed, also. I mounted the eyebolts below the bed rails in the holes that were in the corner stake pockets. I now have four adjustable straps that I connect to my engine hoist and I can raise the bed at any angle I want it to come up.

Re: Taking off the bed

Originally there are 7 short carriage bolts and 1 long. The long one passes through the frame completely, while the shorter ones only pass through the top.
I was taking my bed off so often during the serious building, that I went with long bolts on all 8. Made it a lot easier next time.

Can you explain it better what you mean passes through the frame and then completely through?

Re: Taking off the bed

That bolt has the nut on the bottom lip of the frame.

Think of your frame as a C. 7 bolts only pass through the top of the C, meaning the nut is inside the C. The longer bolt passes through the top and the bottom of the C. That nut would be on the underside of the C.
The holes are already in your frame to do this.

Re: Taking off the bed

Okay, so there's 7 that are on the top half of the frame and 1 that's at the bottom of the frame and goes through to the top? Am I understanding it correctly?

Re: Taking off the bed

The holes are already there (at least they were in my '87). Some of the many unused frame holes.
You pay a premium and buy them from a Chevy parts dealer, assuming they are still available that way, or just go to an Ace Hardware and buy carriage bolts of the proper length.

Re: Taking off the bed

You're welcome.

If you're lucky enough to have help, have someone stand on the top of the bolt (in the bed) whenever you are loosening or tightening the bolts. That square hole in the bed can round out easily if the bolt moves up some. Next time I take my bed off I'm going to have to put in some plates with the square to beef it up.
