the small root in this pic. is about the average size root but the other is the biggest one i have ever saw found it today the darker root in the other pic. is golden seal

Ah yea natures little energy booster, I'm a big fan. Used daily not abused oh did I mention that I'm a big fan?, anyway I would have to agree that is a nice sized root!!!!

yes it was me that posted the mushrooms ginseng grows wild in the woods its hard to find but its a little easier this time of year its turning yellow from green and has red berrys on it

so how many 4 prongs did you find??? yep i hunt it, just haven`t had time in the last few years..so how much is it a pound in your area??

not many 4 but alot of 3 prongs it was about $350.00 a lb. last year

I dig it, we have to wait till Sept. 1st here as the plants aren't really mature enough to harvest starting in August to ensure there continued survival, the feds are pushing for all states still opening digging season Aug. 15th to change to Sept 1st for opening day of digging season to ensure it does not become extinct in the wild. Appears that big root came from either a spot a cultivated woods grown planter used or from the bottom of a holler with rich black sandy soil. The reason I say that is the rhizomes that connect plant to root show that its only 3-5 years old and the small root pictured is even younger.
Its becoming a endangered species so do yourself and your kids a favor and dig only 3 prongs or bigger with a fruiting &or flowering top or at least four internodes on the rhizome of the root and buy seed to plant while digging a lbs of seed runs $40-$50 here has 6000-8000seed per pound and if you plant 2-3 seeds 1" deep per plant harvested in 4-5 years your digging will start to double in yields harvested and replant all seeds from harvested plants 1" deep in same area as you dug the root. Its against Federal law to dig, harvest & export younger than a 4 year old plants roots.
Best root I ever dug was 4years ago it was over 60 years old and weighed 37grams dried. I generally dig anywhere from 5-10 dried lbs a year depending how often I get out in the woods with a average haul of 2-3 wet lbs dug per 5-6 hours of digging with the most I ever dug being back in 1998 when I dug 31.7 dried lbs.
I had one 4 prong plant on our property come up last year that after the seed stalk had another set of 3 sets of leaves form that were above the 4 prong set with a extra seed stalk coming up off that set of 3 sets of leaves so it was actually a 7 prong, THAT was a first for me as I've seen tons of 3 and 4 prongs and a extremely rare sighting of a 5 prong occasionally.
