Score!
I just traded some firewood for 1/8" or 3/16" plate 5'x7'. I am thinking it will make a good bed floor for my truck. Question is how hard is it to remove the angles on the bedsides? Gonna have to drop them down about a 1/2" to account for the thinner floor material (sheet of plywood as of now) right?
What do ya'll think?

PITA. Better off not trying to move them, IMO. Too much trouble for 1/2 inch.

Why not shim the cross sills instead (i.e. weld some spacers to the underside floor)? That way when you want to reinstall the OE wood floor, you won't have hacked the bed up.

Sounds like a smart guy. Get some light weight firewood so the pregnant wife can still haul it. I like the way he thinks.

Man that stuff is heavy. I torched it out of the step bed I had on the old GMC, and carrying it out to the road almost gave me a hernia. I have it in my 9 foot step side as well, and I haven't attempted removing it yet.

How about using pressure treated 1/2" plywood(or whichever size gives correct thickness)under your steel?

I think I am going to use some 3/8" plate to make spacers. I want to weld the spacers and studs to the bottom of the plate, that way the top will be smooth. After it's in I am probably going to rhino line (or something similar) it.

I'm with Don on this one ... I cut some 3/8 plate out of a stepside and it was heavy ... real heavy. Took two of us to get it out of the bed and onto the scrap pile.
Good thing scrap prices were high then. |
