Long Chevrolet oil filter
What is the fram number of the long truck style heavy duty oil filter. You know, the 10-12 inch long screw on one. The guy at the parts store thinks I'm nuts.

The PH-35 is the longest i have ever seen in a Fram "screw-on".......about 4-5 inches long....never seen one longer than that
I use Delco filters, so not totally sure on the Fram part number..... Last edited by Shane; 07-29-2002 at 04:45 PM. |

I have no idea about a fram filter, but racedvl gets the extra capacity filters for his vehicles. You might just shoot him a PM, and ask for the part number.

I use the "long" filters on my truck. They are about 9-10 inches long and hold almost 2 quarts.
Fram = PH373 AC = PF932 Wix = 51794 (the one I use) There is plenty of ground clearance because I have a 4X4. The 2wd guys may not.

The 327 I bought out of a '68 2wd had one of those on it--has a bolt going through the middle. I thought it was oooold (looked it) and figured they probably didn't make'em like that anymore. Cool.

I use the ph373 on my truck, you can see how close the filter is to my headers, using the ph35 made it difficult to change and I think the longer filter should help cool the oil when this close to headers.

I was gonna start using those filters...until i saw that the 2qt. Wix filter costs $10. I change my oil about every 2-3 thousand miles anyway so i really don't need one.
gmcblu, the filter you are talking about with the bolt going through it is a cartridge-type oil filter. There is a filter inside of that, and you replace it. You can still get a Wix filter for one of those too.

Probably not used much any more or may not even be available but on my ' 65 Impala SS Sport Coupe I HAD (key word there HAD) I used a Fram CH200PL which went into a cannister with a thru bolt and used a replaceable ring seal. Thought when they came out with the spin on filter that it was a good improvement. Went out and bought the spin on retro-fit kit as soon as it was available. Seems as if that CH200PL # is burned into my brain.

I ended up getting the NAPA version of that filter which is a couple of inches shorter it seems although they cross reference it to a PH 373. I dont think I could clear my headers with a full length PH 373. Ive used the 373 on a few camaros I had in the past. Their nice when you are using a full flow oil filter adaptor as there is less of a tendency to blow them up when the oil is cold and you are using a high pressure/ hi volume pump. My oil pressure is so high (110 lbs) now when cold I dont dare use a full flow adaptor.
actually I just checked it. The ph373 is only a quarter inch longer. Think I'll use that next time.

If you are using the cartridge-type, be sure that the o-ring on the adapter is seated properly when you service it. If the o-ring isn't changed with each filter change, it is possible that it can blow out of the groove when the engine is cold, or anytime for that matter. Just be sure it is where it belongs....don't assume that it is good.

make sence to me, i have always thought they should spend more time on building better filter and forget all the fancy oil.
if you change your oil every 3-5 k miles like you should you dont need to worry about oil break down, but you do need to worry about particulates IN the oil. thats were these big ass nice filters come into play. even that fancy oil has the same particulats doing the same dammage. so to me.. use the money you are wasting one fancey sythitic oil and use it on filters... but then again, i could be wrong.

Those must flow very well. I'm going to look for one the next time I change my oil.
