Frame up. What to do with the rolling chassis?
I have a 1972 C-10. I plan to take it down to the chassis and would like to replace all problematic parts while they are easily accessible. I plan on keeping the truck original. I would love to hear from people that have done ground up restorations. What you did and where you got your parts. I was thinking of rebuilding/replacing the brakes from the master cylinder all the way to each wheel including all the lines. Was also thinking of front and rear springs, front suspension, driveline U joints, CV joint, exhaust, and whatever else seems reasonable. My intent is not to build a truck that will be shown but to have a great beautiful reliable 1972. Where is the best place to find these parts? Should I plan on finding each part individually or are good kits available? I found this front end kit http://stores.intuitwebsites.com/hst...END/Detail.bok, what do you think of it? Would you purchase any parts from Autozone or Napa? The ideal situation would be if I there were a kit available to rebuild all the remaining parts once the sheet metal was removed from the chassis. Even though I am not looking to purchase extravagant top of the line parts, I do not wish to be constantly replacing inferior ones. I want to do this on a budget and think that it would be foolish to not replace items that are within easy reach.
How would you deal with the frame? I was thinking of just cleaning it up and painting it. What kind of paint would you use? Would you brush it on or spray it? Does it go directly on the cleaned metal or is there some sort of primer that goes first? Any input, advice, or pictures, will be greatly appreciated. I have never done a frame up restoration before. My bed floor needs replaced, I have new inner fenders on a donor truck when it comes down to it the rolling chassis will be staring me in the face. I want this truck to be very nice when finished with no preventable mechanical issues. Thank you for your input and consideration! |

The only thing about buying kits like the one you have posted is you don't really know who makes the parts so you don't know if you are getting great parts for a good deal or cheap parts? You can always call and ask them, or find out if anyone has ordered from them before.
There are a lot of websites out there http://www.classicperform.com (just make sure you ask how long the lead time is) http://www.lmctruck.com http://www.performanceonline.com http://www.brotherstrucks.com/ One of my new favorites: RockAuto.com We did an epoxy primer and NASON chassis black over top.. From what I have read this is the way to go (epoxy primer most durable), besides powder coat. But the project has not left the garage yet so couldn't say for sure. For the front suspension kit, go with the ECE kit, It has everything you will need and it is all MOOG brand.

as far as the driveline goes I'd have a DRIVELINE shop check your driveshafts and see what they need. Ujoints, carrier bearing, cv kit, new slips and stubs, or weld on yokes and have them ballance both shafts. I assume you have a k10 since you said cv joint (double cardain) no 72 c10s came with a cv joint.
