Get'n my GMC low

Ok girl-scouts, here it is

I want know what it would take to get my 67 GMC down low, like the fender being about 2 inches above the wheel
I'm thinking a flip in the rear & at least 3" spindles up front

But here is the catch, I need to haul my 4000 lb. trencher
I don't want to bag it, but helper bags are ok (right now it has over load springs, but I don't see how I could use them once I flip the rear)

This is just a rough idea of what I want it to look like

Any ideas or help is appreciated !

None, unless you plan to carry a load.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

if you slam it like that i would plan on having a crappy ride quality. plan on investing on a good set of drop shocks.

If it's not engineered correctly..... sure. If done right, there's no reason it can't ride better than it did in stock condition & still be able to work like a truck should/can.

Re: Get'n my GMC low

So with flipping it & carrying a load, how much of a notch would I need... just a bolt in ???
Also, what would you do to try and keep it from dragging with a trailer on it... Helper bags ???

P.S. I understand the need for lower shocks or shock relocation

Yes. Bolt in would work fine @ the 6" drop height.

Yes. An air over leaf set-up would work.

Exactly. And I'm sure you realize this, but your photo-shopped pic is much more than a 6" drop.

Re: Get'n my GMC low

2" Z, 3" spindles, 3" springs in front, 6" springs, 2" blocks, and a notch out back.. lower all the body mounts, and it should sit like that

Re: Get'n my GMC low

So up front would you use 3" drop spindles & a 1 or 2 inch spring

Also at 4 or 5 inches up front would I have any rub'n problems ??

I would go spindles & cut 1 coil from the stock springs before I bought 'drop' springs.

No problems if you keep tire sizing conservative. My 68 was 6" drop w/215-70/15's (26.85") on 6.5" wheels & I buzzed the tops of the inner fenderwells on 'big' dips only. Wider wheels w/more rubber or taller rubber will tend to interfere much sooner.

Approx 2~3" of drop per coil removed (2" on newer springs & more on older springs that have some 'sag'. Yes, front drop was approx 6" (3" B.Tech spindles & 1 coil).

For the rear of my 68: Firestone bags, 1.5" lowering blocks, bolt-in c-notch, relocated shocks, adj panhard bar in stock location (approx 8" drop). I can't post pics from my work computer but I have @ least 1 pic somewhere on here already.

*edit.... home now*

A bolt-in notch works. You'll also need to open a hole in the bedfloor for 'pumpkin' clearance @ 8" of drop (or raise the floor).

No clearance problems after the pumpkin poked a hole in what was left of the original wood floor . It was driven daily before being parked for several 'up-grades' & has pulled my 18ft car hauler (loaded w/my 74) @ the height in the posted pic.

Re: Get'n my GMC low

So how many inches do you have between your rockers & the ground

I'm just trying to decide how low I can go without big problem with ground clearance, I think I can get by with a 6/6 drop

I couldn't tell ya. If I could drive around daily w/a 6/8 drop, it stands to reason a 6/6 drop would work but would be kind of 'rakey'.

Re: Get'n my GMC low

I guess my truck is just different (or worn different), cuz it actually sits level right now & my running boards / rockers are about 12" off the ground

What did you haul with your truck & did you ever get off the pavement ???

I've hauled several car's, a couple of trucks, landscape related stuff, & a household worth of furniture & appliances.

I've never had it 'off-road' so I can't help you there. I will say I don't think it's a good idea to have a truck this low & try to use it in the dirt.

Ok, new line of thought

What is the most drop you can get out of shackles ???

Cuz I could cut one coil off the front & use 3" shackles (if they are made) & should be plenty good for what Ima be do'n

We moved the spring perches and shackle mounts on a '91 1 ton up a couple inches about 15 years ago. just popped out the rivets and drilled new holes and bolted the mounts back on. Not a lick of trouble. We did install a set of helper bags ( actually semi cab isolator bags since this was way before FS 2600's were cool )since the bed has a ton of weight in it. I'll try to post a pic if I can find one. same process should work on your truck.

Josh
P.S. Don't count out bags either my shop truck pulls a two car trailer with some heavy classic GM steel and it has been bagged ten years and has a stock floor body drop. Not one bag failure. never left me on the side of the road.
