K&N FilterCharger® Air Filters
My friend was telling me about how great these K&N FilterCharger® Air Filters are and how they put them on all 4 of their vehicles and how much their gas mileage improves. Claims they have more get up and go.
Anyone know anything about these? Do they really help? I did this to my wife's 96 Tahoe. I also did a cat-back eshaust and a Granatelli mass air flow sensor. The Tahoe is much more responsive and, on a 400 mile trip last Monday, I checked the gas mileage. Cruise control at 80 mph, 20 MPG.

I installed one on my 97' ford powerstroke, I could feel the difference, but then again, this is a diesel, and they respond very well to more air flow

I have one on my '92 Chevy. It works very well. I've knocked the dirt out of it several times but haven't cleaned it yet. I have a cleaning kit, just haven't had to use it.
After I installed it, I noticed the engine sounds a little more "throaty" under the hood. Almost as loud as if you flipped the air cleaner lid over. If you get one, you won't regret it.

I have em on two vehicles and will eventually have em on everthing I own. They are great. I think a few other companies are making knock off's now.

I have heard good things about them, but they dont make a kit for any carbureated vehicles, like your '72. You can get a K&N air filter assembly though, but the price is kind of high at $75 from Summit or Jeg's.

If its cleaned and taken care of it'll last for a very long time. I've had one for 3 years now and I love it. Guess I would have bought 6 paper filters in that time, so it will pay for itself in time. Could really tell a difference in the reponse after I installed the K&N.

If you figure the price and the fact that you'll never have to buy another filter again, they are well worth the money. I put one on my truck and could tell the differance right away. It was much more responsive. I'm thinking about getting the lid too.

A K&N filter was on my truck when I bought it. Worked fine in summer but when cold weather came around the truck wouldn't warm up worth a damn. I finally traded it for the stock air cleaner with hot air off the manifold system (snorkel and manifold cover). Problem solved right away.

Must be too cold in Canada !!! I have one,very happy with, not sure of gas mileage improvement, but definately a throatier sound

I put a K&N Filter on my 86 Monte Carlo SS when it was new (210,000 miles ago) and it is still there. Still works great. I will admit I've had to clean it a few times. Haven't had any cold weather related problems.

I have the cold problem with mine too. It's only really an issue when it't near freezing and humid outside. For the winter I run the stock one with the pipe and swap over to the K&N in the summer. As I understand it they do have a stock replacement element for our trucks. They used to anyway.

no way not that much I have a 14" X5" and it came with the upper and lower chrome plates, and it was around 100.00 if I remember. The filter itself is like 50.00 I think

The K&N air filters aren't that expensive, but the filter charger kits for late models are much more complex than the air cleaner assembly. I'm sure it was about 200.00 for the filter charger kit.

I have one in all 3 of mine. I like them very much, never had any problems with any of them. I clean them each 2 a yr. weather they need it are not. I have a TPI 305 in my 71, with a home made cold air set up on it. It would probably work with a carb. also. I replaced the external regulator with the internal one and took the front grille out and drilled a 4" hole where the regulator went. Bought 2 couplings and a 90 from lowes went to the junk yard and found a caddy air housing that i sealed the factory open up and drilled another 4" in the bottom of and ran the hose to the motor. Not that hard. If you want to see pics look at my site in signature. A carb. would be easrier because you wouldn't need the housing, just the hose and some couplings to fit it to the radiator support. Sorry for being so long, but hope this helps. Andy

For our trucks, unless you've got a fuelie in it, you're going to be basically getting an open-element housing and the filter height of your choice.
I've got a 14x5 in chrome on my truck too, heh. Sweet. I don't know if it really did a whole lot, though. I can, however, swear by the Filtercharger kits - there's quite a bit of competition in this area, though. My dad snagged one used for his 1994 Z28, and while there's not much of a seat-of-the-pants difference, or a fuel economy difference (if you're still running points, go HEI, that'll make MUCH more difference than an AIR FILTER), it did show up on the 1320 foot lie detector as a tenth or two. ------------------ Project 1970 - soon to be seen at http://milhouse.treylis.org:81/

I put a K&N high performance kit on my '97 2500 454 a few years ago. I couldn't tell any difference in either power or mileage. Only the slightly "throatier" sound. Its laying on a shelf in my shop. I'd gladly sell it.

I am using the K&N X stream top with there filter on my 383, dont know how much of a difference it made because I switched to a BIGS modified holley at the same time, overall performance increased over the edelbrock carb and cheap open element I use to run.

I just remembered I have one on my '71GMC too. I went into the parts store with measurements and we found one that was the same size. I'm not 100% sure my air cleaner housing is original, but it would be well worth the effort to try to find one.
