Long or short water pump
I have a mid 70's impala 350 with a turbo 350 to put in my truck. It has all accessories on it, and I'd like to find out if I'm going to have clearance issues with the water pump. Is this a long water pump or short? If it's long, can I use it in my truck?
If not, I then have to get all new brackets and pulleys? Here are a couple pics of the motor. Thanks!

Re: Long or short water pump
Long water pump, It will fit under the hood, however you will have to modify the headlight harness because the alternator is on the R/H side of the motor. You will also have to make a new fan shroud or convert to electric fans. WES

Re: Long or short water pump
Will the fan shroud hit the fan? Is that why I will need a new one?

Re: Long or short water pump
The fan sticks too far out from the engine to use a stock shroud. I don't know whether or not it will hit the shoud or not, however it will set too far inside. WES

Re: Long or short water pump
So you dont think it will hit the radiator, but maybe the shroud will not be right?
Maybe I should just get short wp and associated parts.

Re: Long or short water pump
if it comes to close to the radiator, you can change the fan clutch.
a small block with a long pump is shorter than a big block with a short pump

Re: Long or short water pump
I believe that the clutch fan is a bigger diameterthan the stock fan shroud opening as well.

Re: Long or short water pump
I would stick with the long pump and brackets, but someone else might have a better reason to change.

I would go to the trouble to change over if your wanting a factory correct appearing truck. you will have plent of space to work with, and a few minor details to make it work with a long pump. it will be a whole lot easier to find replacement parts later if you use the long pump. it will look more era correct with a short pump.

Re: Long or short water pump
I've always just dropped a long pump engine in place on to the 6 cylinder type of engine stands. That sets the engine back a bit further to compensate for the longer front accessories.

Re: Long or short water pump
Yes it will clear fine. There's still enough clearance to allow removing and reinstalling the HEI if needed.

How far should the fan be from the radiator?
