Alternator install help - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

The water pump is in thank you very much! The alternator was bad so I have a new one I put in however....as it is my first time installing one I have an extra hot wire coming directly from battery that I did not re install( stupid newbie mistake) and cannot figure out where it bolts on. Help?

The wire you speak of, is it the negative battery cable?

What do you mean by extra? Do you already have the one power hooked to the starter and the one to the back of the alternator?

Here is the picture of what I have left. I have the 2 prongs plugged in and the wire under the nut. This is what is left...I am a newbie at this but I do not remember undoing this wire...but I must have...

So thats the wire that goes to the positive battery post? Is it built into the positive battery cable? Got a pic of the other end of that wire?

hope this helps....it is EXTREMELY sunny and hot outside so the camera kept fogging over!

looks to me like its the ground that goes to the frame.

well if it helps...when i "accidentally found it" and grounded it out...sparks flew and the motor about died out.

Isn't that your charging wire? If it is, it goes on the little stud with a nut on the back of your alternator.

well I already attached the wire that came off there...thin red wire to be exact.

Where does the wire that you already hooked up go to? I'm guessing either to the starter or to the fuse block. Either way, you should just hook up both wires under the stud/nut on the alternator.

If your alternate is working and charging your battery with no issues, tape it off and zip tie it secure and you should be fine. My bat cables don't even have that wire.

That is the charge wire for the back of the Altenator. It is a must! I would hook it up and find out where the other wire leads off to. Might be a Previous owner hook up for something else.

Yes. I guessin someone ran another wire to the stud for a power sorce for something? Disconnect it and see what doesnt work?

it worked and we are back running again with new alternator and water pump. Thank you..we are reading out right above 13 on the battery meter and not getting over half way on heat....GREAT NEWS!!
