acorn lugnut qustion ???

Tonight I went to take aw wheel off my Jeep GC and the thin metal cover over the lugnut came off in the socket. There is still a lugnut on there and I tried to get it off but it won't budge??? I even tried to over tighten the others to see if it would come off but no luck ?!?!?! I'm stumped as how to get the darn thing off. Any ideas and help will be greatly appreciated. I can't even drive it to a tire shop since I have the front all tore apart on the other side and it's all jacked up on jack stands.

Thanks in advance.

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

Use the next smaller sized socket and torque that bad boy off.

You may have to use a metric socket to get a tight enough fit on the base lug nut (w/o the stainless cap).

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

Those are disposable lug nuts. They should be replaced unless you are selling the Jeep. Can you imagine how fun those would be on the side of the road? Like Keith said, some metric socket should fit it, then chuck it.

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

The socket fits if nice and tight but I just can't break it loose. I'm going to whack the socket with a hammer and try again when I get home. I worked on it for an hour instead of putting my lift in. So frustrating.

I'll give it hell today when I get home.

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

Be very careful. I had them on a Grand Cherokee and broke them off but the lug nut seat stayed intact. I had to get them torched out which ruined the rims. The seat has threads in it and wont let the rim come off. Good luck. BTW it's a 19mm with the cap 18mm w/o.

Replace them with McGard lug nuts ,they are one piece and will not rust.

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

Hose it with WD-40 or some other lubricant/penetrant, and add some leverage to your breaker bar via a piece of pipe.

Something's gotta give.

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

OK, so.............. I got home and put a socket on the lug nut and hit it real hard with a hammer then put the impact on it and the sucker came right off...... I couldn't believe it. I guess I got lucky. I was so stressed. Thanks for all your help.

Re: acorn lugnut qustion ???

Use Antiseize on the studs before you put the lug nuts back on and you will not have that problem in the future.

Will not always work. I used anti sieze on threads on a 95 Dakota with the same type of lug nut. I went to take off the wheel and the hex broke off but the acorn stayed put. Then I destroyed the wheel.

I use a touch of grease on the studs.
