Unhappy My truck the musician

Well my truck joined an orchestra. All it likes to do now is play a nice high pitch sound (squeal). I tried everything I know to do and the pulleys look pretty much straight. But everything is from different engines. I have a MR Gasket 2 groove crank pulley; A long water pump with a 2 groove pulley; A power steering pump with a home made bracket (PO made) for the outer adjustment bolt; and an alt for a '84 305 Camaro with a stock bracket. Here is a picture (not the best though) of my belt system befor the new alt. but it was a while back when I got that and this started not to long ago.

I'm also not opposed to changing everything but low on cash though. Almost to the point of parking it and just Ride my bike more.

Here is a link to the classifieds section where I'm looking for a system

Re: My truck the musician

Might be just the angle of the photo, but it looks like the alternator/crank/pump belts isn't quite tracking straight. Looks like the alternator is slightly back just a hair.

Re: My truck the musician

I have 2 of the upper alt brackets and both have the bolt hole on the intake ground out to get the bolt in. Did sombody screw up at the factory when stamping these or is it for a diffrent setup?

Loosen one belt at a time and run it and you will find out which one is the musician there. The alternator belt is running down in the alt pulley pretty much. It could be it.

Re: My truck the musician

The alt is the one that does it the worst. It threw the belt off last week. The P/S does it a little.

What years of serpentine can I look for at the Junk yard that will work with this pulley setup

What's the age of the belt? Alt?

I've had belts that were 'use hardened' (but not cracked) that squealed alot. Also, an alt that has a bearing that's worn out can be a culprit too.

Re: My truck the musician

I would definitly say that the alt and ps pump are to far forward. But I would also check the alternator. They make a high pitched sound when the bearings are bad, also the ps pump when they are low on fluid.

Both belts are new now. The old alt belt was as old as the alt. about 6 months.

Prob 84-87 V6/V8 stuff. Alot then were partial serp set-ups w/some v-belt add-ons. It would prob be easier to go the 88-up brackets (S10 or GM trucks).

Re: My truck the musician

I'm just wanting to rip everything off from the front of the engine except for the balancer and the water pump and just replace it all if I cant get this straight. Would like to just replace the pulley on the alt to serpentine because I have a lifetime warranty and it is a 94 amp alt.

Re: My truck the musician

I got everything I needed from a 94 4.3 V6 out of a C1500, bought new water pump (I needed alternator too as one I got was NG), and changed the fitting on the power steering pump so it would match the old style Hi pressure fitting.

Re: My truck the musician

It's really hard to be sure from these pics but I bet an 1/8" thick shim behind the water pump pulley will take care of this noisey rascal. I have seen these shims at the salvage yards before but don't know what they came off of. A man could make some if he wanted to.

Re: My truck the musician

say,

i see something out of the norm here. when i here squeaky belts its usually cause of 2 reasons first they get old and dried out. second is what i see in your first photo. something sprayed the engine compartment be it oil, antifreeze, muddy water or what not. you say you put new belt on with the new alternator and it stated squealing sometime later. i would guess they got wet with something. have you tried a bar of soap. another old man trick. do this at your own risk. go get a bar of soap and run engine. be careful and run soap on the under side of belt. keep hands and sleeves away from belt and pulleys just put one end against the belt. it should make a slight groove on the bar and stop the squealing. remeber try this at your own risk.

If this is the case I just might wait untile I get the new engine I have an oil leak some where but my truck makes it's own oil. I dont get it I park and it marks its territory but my oil level always stays full. And the mark is black.

Re: My truck the musician

just trying to help. yes i understand normal fluids should not effect the belt but i would say somthing has. have you tried the soap. it seems silly but everytime i have had squeeky belts i have done this trick and it fixed it everytime. you can put it on without running the motor by sliding it between the pullys. remember put it on the runing side of the belt. they used to sell belt dresser i dont no if they still do.

85? 86-87 Full size trucks have a wide belt for the alternator and v belt for the ps. Cheaper than a serp system.

Re: My truck the musician

getting a better ground will help some. right now it looks as though it is trying to ground through the painted alt. bracket.
you may also try a different brand belts. carquest is Gates. try Dayco or goodyear.

How would the ground help?? I have never had any grounding problams that I know of and have ran my ground there on this truck and a Camaro I had for 3 years.

I had a belt from Oreily's on it (I think it was Kelly somthing)

Re: My truck the musician

I know. I'm just getting tired of this engine and trans and new stuff is just out of reach. On top of it all I'm wanting to go serpentine but every time I think about it I go blank. I tried the soap thing befor but don't think I did it right. I'll try again tomorrow.

Re: My truck the musician

well I put the soap on but I tried something while I did it. I put some on the front side of the V first (side to the radiator) an there was little change then I put it on the back side (facing the engine) and it got quiet. I'm thinking the alt needs to be moved forward. the old W/P pulley was wore down on the back side of the grooves
