WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

I am in desperate need of a driver's side rear stepside longbed fender with the spare tire cutout for a 68-72. I recently found out that the longbed and shortbed fenders with the cutout for the spare tire are different. I had bought a rust free fender in 2007 in anticipation of my truck's restoration and after having it sandblasted and primed and fitting it to the truck, I realized that my spare doesn't fit correctly. My truck is a longbed and I have a shortbed fender. Sorry about my sob story, but I was weeks away from paint and having it finished after 15 years of it being off the road! Now I need another hard to find part! Oh well, another challenge, I guess. So if anyone out here has the fender I need or knows of one, I would love to have the chance to buy it. Thanks, Dave

That stinks. I didn't realize they were different either. I wonder why they would have bothered making them different back then. Seems like an extra expense for GM when then could probably keep them the same part.

What's the difference? Was it just the spare "mount", and not the fender?

Re: WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

The mount and the fender are both different (shortbed vs. longbed). The dimensions of the cutout where the spare fits are different and the shortbed fender has a hole (about 2" in diameter) in the cutout area. The mount goes through this hole. The longbed fender has no hole and the mount is located further toward the cab. I have attached two pictures. The one that is in gray primer is my truck showing the incorrect shortbed fender with my longbed mount. The yellow truck shows the correct longbed fender with the correct longbed mount. I am needing a fender like the one on the yellow truck.

The picture of the white truck makes this all kind of confusing. That fender appears to be the correct pic of the fender you want . However the bracket either appear to be of either a long bed 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. I cannot tell because it is just a pic. Length betwen studs would tell. Appears to be a mis match or conglomeration of parts. If this picture works this is from a previoust post and shows fender and sidemount. Good Luck. I have had them but been years and rare. I could not paste it but here is the link with other carriers.

Not sure about the 67-72 but on the earlier trucks it was due to wheelbase, tire diameter and bed length.

Re: WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

Dustytrix, I would like to see pictures of the two shortbed fenders that you have, if you don't mind posting them. From what I've learned so far, the spare tire mount goes through that hole on the shortbed trucks. The tire has to be mounted a little higher and farther back into the fender because there is less room between the cab and the fender on the shortbed. The longbed mount can be a little farther forward since there is more room between the fender and the cab. Therefore the mount on the longbed mounts completely to the bed side and not through the fender, hence no hole on the longbed fenders.

That is somewhat weird I have 2 short bed step fenders, with spare cutout and neither have a hole in them.

Can you post a picture? I am curious about how may styles there can be. Familiar with the 53-66 but not so much the 67-72 .

Re: WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

I was wrong, bad wrong, I pulled up old pictures of the trucks and the holes were there. Someone must have filled the holes in with metal. Sorry about that.

Re: WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

Thanks for the pic, Paul. It looks like that is the correct setup for a shortbed. The fender has the hole (It's hard to tell from the pic, but the mount seems to be going through the hole). The other thing that I've noticed when looking at different pictures, is that the shortbed tire mount attaches to the top of the bed rail (and through the hole in the fender). The long bed mount only attaches to the side of the bed, not on the top. The correct longbed setup is shown in the picture I posted earlier of the yellow truck. Thanks, Dave.

Re: WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

Also to clarify, my picture from above (and below) of the white/grey primer truck is a mismatch of parts. It is a shortbed fender with the longbed mount. This pic is of my truck which is a long bed so it has the correct tire mount. I need the correct longbed fender, which is shown in the picture of the yellow truck. Thanks.

Re: WTB 68-72 Driver's side stepside long bed fender with spare tire cutout

The short bed step tire mount support bar goes thur the fender cut out .

( See white truck in pics ) .

The the 1/2 fender cut out stops above the lower body line.

( See black fender )

The 3/4 fender cut goes 2" approx below the lower body line near the bottom bedside to step mounting line.

( See my blue / white finder ) Sorry about this pics lwb are stacked .
