Serial number question

My VIN is KE241S648141. From my understanding, the numbers after the place built represent how many trucks were built on that assembly line for the year...but surely they didn't make 648141 trucks that year? And my truck was only built in March

Anyone care to shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Re: Serial number question

Dont quote me but I thought serial numbers started at 100000 and new models started late the previous year, not January. Its very possible that many trucks were made. Im sure others will chime in with certain answers.

Re: Serial number question

Sept was the new model year i believe. I think the numbers were different according to which plant they were built at. I think one plant started at 100000, plant 2 may start at 400000 etc.

Re: Serial number question

Plants did use different start numbers on occasion. From the look of things 71 Chevrolet St.Louis production may have started at 600001. The lowest I have is 601308.

1971 Chevrolet Truck serial numbers started with 600001. I can document this for 8 out of the 10 assy. plants, still need to document Norwood and Pontiac. Anybody got a SPID from Norwood or Pontiac in 1971, for a Chevy?
67-70 and 72 chevys started with 100001. Trucks built on a second assy line usually started with 800001.
