texas title transfer ?

Does anyone know if its really necessary to get insurance for a truck thats not running in order to apply for a title here in Texas. I'll be going to the county tax office tomorrow but would just like to know ahead of time.
Thanks!

I agree, you can transfer the title, just not register it.

Yes, these guys are absolutley correct. I bought my truck last year, but just transferred the title in December 09. As long as you do a transfer of title only, you do not need insurance. Now, to register it you will need insurance though. I didn't need to register mine because it is not running. Nor will it be for a while since the cab and all is off of the frame.

Re: texas title transfer ?

If you have current insurance on the other vehicles you own you can register it if it is within 30 days of purchase . I was told your current insurance covers a new car purchase for 30 days . I have always just walked in and shown them my current policy ( without the new car/truck on it ) and gotton it done . Out of state is different and has to be inspected first . An inspector won't even look at it with out insurance . If you title it and don't register it they will send you a notice to that effect saying you have 10 days to take action . If you get as ticket in it without regestration i can't imagine what the fines would be like when you did actually register it .

Re: texas title transfer ?

When you go to dmv tell them you want "Title Only" If it is currently reqistered make sure and take the plates and sticker off of it, if it has any. They will want them.

Yep, they take the plates now. Taxes are also figured on what the state thinks it's worth NOT what you paid for it. A bill of sale does you no good as far as taxes.

Ugh. When did they pass this? I titled a '79 last year so I would have been exempt anyways. But still...

I have never had a problem, and do not get in a hurry to swap the title.

If you have the correct year license plates, you pay a small fee, and then you do not need an inspection sticker again.

Guys, I really think all these rules are valid. But, I think it also depends on whose working that window on that specific day. I say this because, I just "titled-only" my C10 in December. I paid $2500 for my truck, but told them it was a gift. She then said, "Well...you have to tell me how much you think it's worth." I then said, "It's just a broke down old, raggedy truck that doesn't run. I'd say it's about $150." She then said, "That's fine by me." She also offered to register it for me with no insurance, but I wasn't willing to pay the extra money right then because my truck will not be operable for some years and I was also registering my daily driver and my work truck. She never asked for any plates, bill of sale or anything. I did the same thing with my Chevelle several years ago that I paid $2000 for. Same outcome. Before the Chevelle, I had a '66 Impala, which is what I sold to buy the Chevelle, same scheme. I do know for the smaller towns in Texas, they do hassle you for more documents and do things more-so by the book. In downtown Dallas, the line is so damn long, I think those ladies could care less. 90% of the people at the windows are women who know nothing about classic cars. Just make it seem as if it is some old jalopy that is broken down into parts and you're going to fix it up. They will not question you. It has worked for me three times.

I think your right about it depending on who's at the window. I went to reg my truck and there were 15 people in front of me, she turned everyone away for one reason or anther and turned me away for having the truck 31 days before I tried to reg it and not allowing me to use my Insurance card, had to get the ins co to fax over a letter I was covered.

I missed that. The last used vehicle I titled was a 1999.

Re: texas title transfer ?

I tried to title only my truck when I first got it this past summer and they refused to do it. Told me I had to have insurance and inspected before they could transfer the title. So i just waited till I had it road worthy. I guess it depends on who it is working as to what you can do. They only charged mne taxes on what I paid.
