Starter question....
What's up guys...Been a long. My project "rock-a-billy" needs a new starter. Currently it has the older style starter thru the 3-speed. Can I run a block mounted style starter?? What, if any, changes do i have to do ??
John

Re: Starter question....
The block mount should work fine as long as it will fit into the bell housing.

Cool man...I'll give it a shot. I just remembered I have an old block mount starter (bad unit) that I can test fit before I order the new one. John

Re: Starter question....
If your truck is running a 3 speed manual trans, you will need to replace it with a manual trans starter that bolts to the bellhousing. If you truck has the automatic trans, you can use the engine mount setup.
The cone on the automatic starter is bigger than the cone on a manual starter. My old neighbor found this out when doing a starter swap on his '67. David

Re: Starter question....
Is that the only issue ?? I could just open up the housing with the plasma if thats the case. What about flywheel teeth size ?? Were they different compared to like an auto flexplate ??? I wanted to drop in a gear reduction starter. (so I can easily start that HI-comp Kragen engine )....na, just like the sound and I have one readily available for cheap. Thanks again guys !!

Re: Starter question....
John,
I have a few questions. Why? How many years has the current setup worked? What is the advantage to making the change? And, will the change justify the cost? But, to answer your question. With enough money, one can do anything. |

- 2) I can get one for cheap (FREE !) - 3) The engine will eventually be rebuilt to a higher compression I'm sure the current set up has worked for a long time (not sure, I haven't had the truck not even a year yet). And yes it will justify the cost. I am getting the new starter for free (brand new)....and a replacement or rebuilding of the current starter is far more expensive than even a stock block mounted starter !!! And ya, what SLEPY said!!!!! John
