That block can be 2 or 4 bolt mains, you just have to pull the oil pan to see. It's a common 4 inch bore block. So it could be a 302, 350, or 327. If there is 010020 by your oil filter, it's a high nickel and tin block

Last digits (010) designates it as a 4 bolt main block.

Well HEdouble hockey sticks! I always thought that 010 blocks were either LT-1 or truck 4 bolts. I've never seen a 2 bolt 010.

Ehh, wrong. The 010 sitting in my Suburban is a 2-bolt - it can be either.
This is known as the casting number - doesn't nail down much except that it's 4" bore which was common to the 302, 327, and 350. Good block but one of the most common.

it's hard to tell from the down view....but are those camel hump heads? As easy as it is.....I'd pull the valve cover and get the casting number of the heads. Although anything is possible, sometimes the heads can help narrow down what the block MIGHT be. Long shot but it would be fun if it was a long block. Not too sure about the truck motors being mostly 4 bolts though.

I have the same block casting in my shop. Mine is a Large journal 327 4 bolt main.

The odds of it being a 302 from a '69 Z/28 are about a million to 1.
If the heads are original (who knows) the accessory holes pretty much knock out the 327. Greatest percentage 350. It is been said for a lot of years that a 350 engine with a "factory equipped" 4 barrel carburetor would be a 4-bolt main. But I wouldn't count on it, GM did a lot of kooky things back in the day.

Do you have the numbers and letters that are just below the front passenger head on the small flat spot on the front of the engine?
That is what I normally use to determine what engine is in vehicles. Danny

Both of my '69 350ci trucks had that 3970010 block,both were 4 bolt mains. This last one worked great until a rod decided to run away from home.

I personally own two 350s with that same casting number. One is a 2-bolt main, the other a 4. The two bolt one is now the 383 in my truck.
Don't get too hung up on the 4-bolt main cap thing. In stock form it doesn't matter much.

mrein3 gives good advice on the 4 bolt. We get too hung up on 4 bolts. Blower....NOS....that's one thing. I realize that wasn't really what you were asking too. Lots of BBC's were 2 bolts and usually good up to 600hp! The dynos don't lie.
You can always pull the heads and measure the piston bore! lol |

PS....as stated above; if the block hasn't been decked and removed the numbers off the pad on the pass side of the block, just under the front of the head, that's the best way to tell really what it is. There will be a 2 or 3 digit suffix (letter, not numbers) that you can trace. This is, of course, assuming it hasn't made a trip to the machine shop.

I only checked ONE source but taking the casting number and the suffix code (cmj), it should be a 1974 police 350 with a 4 barrel. I can check other sources later but this is probably accurate.

Well so far what I know is I have a 1976 high nickel and tin block made in Canada it is 4 bolt main it was stamped on April 17, 75 or 76 and could have a problematic valve train, but mine has been replaced. Any way and most important to me is that it is a Chevy!!
I could really care less if it was 4 or 2 I am not racing just my daily driver was in my 1985 for the last 6 year! Now at home deep in my 1967 C-10 Not sure why everyone got caught up on that I wanted to know just a little history, so when I am at the gas station or a car show and some one ask I don’t stand there catching flies with that dumb look on my face!!! lol Man you guys are very helpful Thank You! Now my next question where do I find the extension for brake peddle Rod and how long is the right length? |

It's a good way to keep us all sharp and I believe that more people are learning just from reading your question and our answer. We do this not just for you but all the others that are quietly reading! A lot of forums won't even let you delete a question after it's been answered so others can learn. Heck, it even lets some of the old timers get into a knowledge face-off. Lastly....you will find the extesion for the brake pedal under the dash and it's about that long! |

I am not sure what my engine is, I just picked it up of craigs list, The block casting is 3970010 I looked that up and it is a 302/350, The heads I think are double hump casting number 3782461, the number on the right front pad below the head is V1107tyz, Looked up the TYZ and it is a 350 from a 1975 c10-2500. Also it is stamped Langston Racing engines 8-83. Looking like it is a 350, I heard it run before I got it and it definitely has a cam in it. Anyone else have any idea, with the Langston racing stamp it sound like it is a modified 350.

I bought a small handbook with chevy casting numbers once and for years it was with me at every swap meet or on every parts hunt.
The 010 casting is basically a 4" bore block as stated both 2 and 4 bolt. In most applications 4 bolt is for mostly for the owner's warm fuzzies. Scott |
