Guage Clusters....
I borrowed this picture from another post 2 help illustrate my question. I have a dummy cluster (Speedo and Gas Gauge Only) and on the back it seems to missing the same plug as this one.
What are the black plugs for or do? And why is that one missing?

Light Plug
It's one of your instrument light bulbs like the others that light up the speedomoter.

If you pull out those black plugs (they twist out) there are light bulbs on the other sides. The one that is missing is the black plug that is at the end of the fiber optic indicator light that is supposed to go from there...up your steering column and into the shift indicator for an automatic truck. It carries light from the gauge cluster to the shift indicator. If you do a search on "fiber optics" I bet you will find some good threads about this topic.
I know this because the previous owner of my blazer cut my fiber optic cable and a board member sent me one for free in the mail so that mine would light up. It was kind of a pain to replace, but it always seems like those little things end up a pain in the a$$ |

thats a hole for another indicator light, aroung the speedo their are several warning lights, around here if you buy a truck with a lamp unplugged, it's probably because the previous owner was unable to make it go off. most likely a brake, or check engine light.
shine a flash light through the hole and see what lights up on the front.

Here is a pic of one lit up and the off white lightbulb holder is the one you are missing in the back of your gauge cluster
