fast idle problem 78 chevy 350 quadrajet

hey i neeeeed some help. i just put this 350 in my granpas s10 and i cant get it tuned right. i put a rebuilt quadrajet on it and it has hei. the vacuum lines have one of those thermo deals on the thermostat housing. i routed my hoses around that. so i have one hose to the transmission, one to the cruise, one to the booster, and one to the distrbuter. i timed it the best i could so it is at really close to 12 before tdc at about 800 rpm. i cant keep the engine idling at 800 though. i have to keep revving it otherwise it will die. to get it to idle good it is at about 1200 rpm. what do i adjust? do i need the vacuum thing? should i time it different? is there a step by step tuning instruction thing somewhere i could read? THANKS FOR THE HELP, Ben

Is the 350 stock? Or if not what kind/size cam is in it?

Also check close for vacuum leaks.
