Advice on getting rid of my 69(forgive the story)

Ok i have 69 lwb truck i have been working on i have added disc brakes(just got to add the brake lines) with 3" drop spindles, cups and plates from sd dominator bags(have all the other bag stuff wating to be installed),2" drop blocks in the rear new rear brake shoes all new ball joints and fairly new tie rods,ps gearbox, and a custom made 1 pc drive shaft for a th400 that cost me $300. And a few more other things my problem is i dont have a title and i dont have the cash to get one. I have no clue what to do. and if i sell no idea how much to ask. I guess what im asking is what can i get, but i also would like to know what can i do to keep it. well thanx for reading and sorry for the story and here is some pics before i added the brakes and bags

Why don't you just look at buying another cab that has a title?

i was refering to a legal swap of the vin. I have a buddy that did this with a 69 chev. The DMV here in idaho has a gal that comes out and checks it all out for you and watches you attach the vin tag.

Whats up with the title? I know in Idaho you can apply for a lost title, the cost is only about 12 bucks. If there is no leans on the title should be easy enough. What about a title from a donor truck? I know that i have a title for a 68 that will probably go the crusher. You could always swap the vin number???? I know if you contact the DMV they can help

Are you sure that you have to have a title? In Alabama I didn't have to have a title for my '70 at all. Just a bill of sale and proof of insurance.

Question...does the title go with the frame or cab? Or...is it a state by state regulation? Also...could a person just go and apply for a lost replacement title. Just some ideas. Good Luck 69Rob with your quest.

HOORAAY! A Question I know the answer too.

The title always goes with the cab of the truck since that is where the VIN is placed.

This is what i was talking about, you can legally move the vin from one cab to another in my state. You do need to contact the DMV though

How long have you had the truck, where did it come from, and why don't you have a title? I bought a 1985 honda 250r three wheeler that the guy didn't have the title for. All I needed was a notarized bill of sale and an inspection from the state patrol. If you know the reason why it doesn't have a title that will make things easier. If you got the truck from a family member and the title is just missing you can just have the said person apply for a replacement title. I had to do that on a car I owned and it was easy and I don't think it cost me anything. But like on my three wheeler since I had to to a bill of sale I had to pay sales taxes on it. Give us somemore info and I think you will get some help on how you can keep the truck.

Not true.
I bought my truck from a good friend. He had relocated to Wyoming from Minnesota, picked up a mutt truck in that state - with all the title documentation - then ended up selling the truck to me.

In Wyoming the title was written up with the frame's VIN. All was fine and good there.
When I tried to title it in MN the DMV had a hissy fit about the VIN not matching the VIN on the cab. I stepped away from the clueless one at the window and scheduled a time to have it looked at. I came armed with all the copies of all the titles from Wyoming. I'm sure they ran both VINs to check for a stolen vehicle but in the end I got a new Minnesota title with the cab's VIN.

Long story short it DOES depend on your state.

The serial number is on both. The prudent and legal thing to do would be to buy a parts truck with legal title that either has a good cab or good frame (or both ) and use That component and then apply for a rebuilt title.

One thing, were there any old registration papers in the truck when you got it or license plates on it or other indications of who might have owned it, at least at one time.
I had to track down the person who last owned one vehicle about 20 years ago when someone came along and offered way more then I had in it or thought it was worth. When I got it I wasn't worried about a title because I was going to strip it an then cut the rest up and haul it for . I had to jump through a few flaming hoops to do it but I did get ahold of the last person who the truck had been registered to and get a signed and notorized release of interest. It turned out that they had sold it as a parts car a few years before with the title and the title got lost somewhere when it changed hands several times after that.

If you do that don't mention that you have put a bunch of money and new parts in it or someone might just show up to claim "Dad's old truck" with title in hand and the Sheriff along for the ride.

I'll be honest, the way things go now, I wouldn't spend a nickle on any truck that I bought or was given that didn't have a title in my name unleouss I could get proof positive that I owned it. Either by a signed release of interest, bill of sale from a wrecking yard or auction or other documentation.

You probably have already but if you haven't and there are papers in the glove box or in other places in the truck sort through them and see if the title might be mixed in with them.
I was just in the middle of cutting up an 86 S-10 Blazer when the glove box popped open and out fell a stack of papers. Right in the big middle of them was a signed title for the Blazer that the guy who had given it to me said had no title.

In this state and most others you can apply for a bonded title. That is,you have the truck inspected by who ever inspects vehicles in that state (usually somone connected with the State Patrol). If everything checks out (meaning it wasn't reported stolen) you then apply for a bonded title that will become a clear title in X amount of them if no one shows up to contest the bonded title. Once I had it to a point of where it could pass inspecton and run and drive that is what I would do if it were me.

The best thing you can do is to contact your local DMV office and see what you are allowed to do by law, only then will you know what options you have available.

First of all thanx for the replies. The guy i got the truck from was going to get me the title but ran into some trouble and now cant get me the title. I cant file for lost title since i am not the orignal owner of the truck. And i called the dmv and they told me i shouldnt even mess with it cuase it can take a very long time to get it done. I asked about switching cabs and i would have to have the whole truck inspected after i was done by a state trooper to match the vin number on the frame and cab.

Hmmm... i hear of people in TX switch from a lwb to SWB frame all the time with no issues.

Yeah, no kidding. Or switching after an accident, or mechanical (rust) issues.

Finding out the reason why he "ran into some trouble and now cant get me the title" is the first thing to do.

What kind of trouble? Is he in jail now, or did he just lose the physical title? If he just lost it, he needs to go apply for a lost title. I had to get a duplicate vehicle title once because I accidentally shredded the original (it was in a stack of other papers I shredded, OOPS!!). I just had to show proof of ownership (an old registration in this case) and ID, and they were able to see in their system that I did in fact own it. They printed off a new title right there for under $20.

The guy i got it from is not the orignal owner he was going to use some people he knew to get me the title but now he just dont have the funds. There is some one here locally that can get me the title but it will cost me any wheres from 450-700 for them to get it. i just dont have that much money to use on that. I asked a person at the dmv about changing cabs and they said all numbers had to much maybe i got some one who was in a bad mood that day dont know.

Lost Vehicle Titles

If a title is misplaced, you can get a certified copy by following the steps below. If a lien is recorded, the lienholder should complete the application for certified copy of title.

By Mail

1. Complete a certified copy of title application.
2. Enclose a copy of the owner's valid photo ID and $2 mail-in fee by check, cashier's check or money order (no cash accepted) payable to the Texas Department of Transportation. An agent of the owner or lienholder must also provide a letter of signature authority on original letterhead, a business card or a copy of the agent's employee ID.
3. Mail the application to your vehicle titles and registration regional office.

In Person

1. Visit the nearest vehicle titles and registration regional office.
2. Complete a certified copy of title application.
3. Provide a valid photo ID and $5.45 fee for walk-in customers. An agent of the owner or lienholder must also provide a letter of signature authority on original letterhead, a business card or a copy of the agent's employee ID.

Valid Photo Identification

Acceptable photo IDs include state or U.S. Government issued photo IDs, such as Texas or other state driver license, identification card, U.S. passport or military identification.

Power of Attorney

If the title application is signed with a Power of Attorney, in addition to the requirements above, the following must also be provided:

* a photo ID of recorded owner/lienholder signing the power of attorney, and
* a photo ID of the person signing the application.

NOTE: Businesses given power of attorney are required to provide a letter of signature authority on original letterhead, business card or a copy of employee ID.

I just called and walked through some scenarios over the phone:

Rob, call 512.465.7611. ask for your regional offices #, then ask for the procedures to request a bonded title. They can pull the vin# over the phone and direct you to the best scenario.. I also mentioned that i wanted to purchase a wrecked parts truck because my cab from KS. is in bad shape, and asked if i had to have it inspected and was told no.
