Towing another truck with a uhaul

Uhaul's website is telling me that to two a 1/2t 4wd, their trailer does not have the capacity........and if I lie and say I need to two a 1/2t 2wd, Uhaul says my 3/4t 4x4 cannot tow this vehicle.....am I missing something here?? This seems a little rediculous to me......I see people towing 5th wheels that weigh 3 or 4 times what their truck weighs?

Yeah, it's pretty rediculous trying to get a car trailer from U-haul. I think you just need to tell them you're going to haul a dodge neon or a kia or something... 'cause they won't give you a trailer if the computer says it won't work, no matter how much you argue. Good Luck!

Speaking from personal experience, measure from the outside of the left tire to the outside of the right tire width. Then measure the "inner fender" width of the u-haul trailer. In December of 1995, I moved from Virginia to Mississippi. I drove my 1995 Impala SS while my dad drove the U-haul 24' truck (that was less than 1/3 full) with my 1970 K5 Blazer 4x4 on the car hauler behind it. We had to make a special trip to the junk yard to buy a set of stock Nissan 2wd truck wheels and tires. This is the only way the truck would fit without breaking off the trailer tail lights.

I recently used a Uhaul 2 axle trailer to haul a '70 a few hundred miles and the rep at the Uhaul place made a point to ask me if it was 2wd or 4wd due to the tires. The 2wd I had BARELY fit width wise. Find some stock steelies and you should be good.

I also had to borrow the company truck because the software said my Silverado wouldnt tow the C-10... . I know I looked like a tool driving down the road towing a classic Chevy with a new ugly a$$ F--D!! i should have said it was an S10 or something.

I just got back from Kentucky (220 miles) a week or so ago with my 85 in my sig, on the 4 wheel trailer from Uhaul.

We had to take the front tires off (10" wide rims and thick meaty tires oh yeah!) and get some rusted out 7" rims and knobbly tires ($25 including mounting and swapping the tires for me! hahaha) so it would fit between the wheels of the trailer. Pulled her back home with my wife's Yukon and all was good. Had the tires put back on and the oil changed and I'm rocking in my new/old truck.

And yes next time I need a hauler I'm just gonna tell them I'm hauling a Neon or Escort or something else puny and then haul what I need hauled without making it harder for myself.

I rented a trailer from u-haul to tow my 70 chevy. It did not matter once I got to Uhaul. They did not even look at my truck.

Like some mentioned, make sure you measure the width of your front tires. I had a tight fit getting on the trailer. My truck had 255 or 265's 70's on the front and they rubbed the inner fenders of the trailer.

I was able to run 65-75 mphs towing the truck.

The manager didnt go outside to check (hot as hell) but the yard monkey took his job seriously and was all about it...which I appreciate considering all the people out there like me who had never towed a vehicle before. I kept scaring myself looking in the rearview and seeing the grill of the truck RIGHT THERE!! Was a good learning experience.

The Uhaul store I went to did not have a yard person. It was more of a independent U-Haul/ Gas Station/Bait Shop. Plus it was raining.

Had the same problem trying to rent one for a 57 chevrolet car. Too much weight they kept telling me.. I told them numerous times however, that at the time, the car had, no motor, trans, front clip, doors, on the car pretty much just the shell I needed to move. ---dude just kept staring blankly at his computer.

YUP TOW BAR 150.00 end of story..

i towed a 1/2 truck with a 1/2 truck..from tenn. and if was very scary..
the brakes on these trucks are lucky to stop the truck..much less two trucks think about it..better hope it don't rain..or have a blow out...or have to stop fast...

A couple years ago we went down to San Antonio to pick up a 68 short step. It wouldn't fit on the U-Haul tow dolley - and the tires weren't that wide. So I ended up buying a used tow dolley from the guy next door. Best purchase I ever made. I hauled the 68 behind a 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan. Year later hauled a 71 short step from eastern KY with the same setup. Last month a 71 longbed, minus engine, same way from northern Texas.

If you consider the tow bar thing, I'd limit the # of miles you do that. I use mine to pull things around town all the time, it's great. Then I made the mistake of pulling a 68 C10 with my 69 K10 from Baltimore, MD back home. Talk about pucker factor!!! It was fine as long as the road was dry, and there was nothing tricky. The problem I ran into is the 68 wanted to control the rear end of my truck in sharp corners, and when the rain came & the road was wet... Took a clover-leaf entrance ramp in the rain... My truck was fish-tailed around the ENTIRE corner from the 68 pushing!!!!

While there isalearning curve with a tow bar, There is no reason not to use them on the open road for a great distance. Ask anyone with an RV, they are awsome.

I used a tow bar attached to the front bumper to pull a 71 with a 71 from Dallas to Chicago. It was a piece of cake because there was little weight on the hitch. In my opinion it was much better than when I pulled it on a U-haul trailer because those U-haul trailers are heavy. Just be sure to check that it is secure when you stop.

If you do go with the u-haul, get the insurance. It's worth it and they will pay out if you tear up anything - your stuff or theirs.

Will not cover if you don't give the correct info on the car you're towing. If it says on the contract you're towing a Cavalier, they won't pay for the 68 short step that's laying on it's side

Yep, I love my towbar. It has already paid back my initial investment two fold and I still have it for future use.

As you can see in my pic, I used a uhaul... 1/2 ton Dodge towing a 1/2 SWB Chevy and the computer let it, said my Tahoe couldn't do it though.. $50 for the day and I got a brand new one with a great inirtia brake system. Towed 65 MPH like nothing....
