Anyone have a remote start on their Carb truck?

I've got a real nicely tuned motor that starts in cold weather easily and I'm thinking about a remote start option.
I looked here from another thread and they all were up in arms about it.

My thoughts are how can you make it safe?
I have a manual trans in my '68.
I'd hate to hear it grinding it down the drive way or back into the woods one morning .

I thought about making a master switch on the dash I'd have to flip in order for it to work. Only flip it once its in neutral, choke pulled, and heater on.

What y'all think and what's the best cheap one?

How do you plan to set the choke? Once it fires up your manual choke would have to be pushed in slightly as it warmed wouldn't it?

Re: Anyone have a remote start on their Carb truck?

I thought about this a couple of years ago. I would think a couple of relays, a switch on the e-brake to make sure it is set, and the high idle solenoid off a 6.2 diesel to set the choke. Brake sensor switch to enable the system and make sure the brake is set to keep the truck from rolling away. The solenoid on relays would "depress the accelerator pedal" and release it to set the choke, then a relay to engage the starter. My concern was that the solenoid might not have the necessary force to over power the throttle return spring.

In the end I abandoned that dream in favor of fuel injection (that I haven't got around to yet either) then I'll put the remote starter on. Oh yeah, all three of my trucks are automatics as well,

Not sure how safe it would be in a manual trans truck.
I always park my manual trans vehichles in gear.
I would end up running people down from the warmth of my house.

Y'all just 'bout made me spew coffee on my MacBook.....
I can remember being like 6 years old and we had a '76 Silverado and, yep, I was dressed up and sent out in the cold to start that thing up. Good memories.

I'll giggle for days on the "From the warmth of my house..."

But with all that. I think we're over complicating this.
If you're smart enough to NOT flip the switch I was talking about until all the safety measures are in place, i.e. trans in neutral, choke pulled, brake set, then there should be no problem.
About the pumping of the throttle, that may be the only concern, however, if it's all tuned right then it should start up.
Concerning the release of the throttle: to me that means the truck is warm and it's time to go. Plus I normally jump in, pull the throttle to keep it running while I'm getting down the drive and pulling out into traffic. Once I'm on the road, I push it in anyhow.

So with that said, I think this'd be an easy mod and cheap too.
I'm gonna look into it and maybe by the end of the winter have some install guide for us.....

Anyone that has one, chime in and let me know how it was done

Re: Anyone have a remote start on their Carb truck?

Unless you put a neutral safety switch on it, I would not do it. Several years ago I was showing off my stereo system that was activated by my alarm remote fob. As I am pushing the buttons turning features on and off, we notice my buddies truck lurching across the parking lot toward another car.

It seems that our alarms were the same brand, and my remote was able to activate his remote start. His truck was a manual and it was left in gear. Although it didn't start, the starter was strong enough to walk the truck several feet across the lot.

Strange, but true....

Re: Anyone have a remote start on their Carb truck?

I did one on a 71 truck with an automatic. This was in phoenix az. It started every time I tested it but it was warm outside. I have no idea if it started in the winter because it was a customers truck and I never had a callback on it. It was by far the easiest install I ever had.

I have never came across an after market switch that would work for neutral. I am sure you could make something up but I would be concerned that it would fail so I would also use one on the ebrake for redundancy.

As far as brands I have installed hundreds of audiovox units without many failures and the prices are reasonable. Look on ebay they have them for 50 bucks. My wifes car and my toyota have the 2 way models (the remote has an lcd that shows when the car is started and pages the remote if the alarm goes off).
