350 vs 390

Just thought i would share a memory when my dad was still alive. He had a late seventies 3/4 ton chevy pickup all time four wheel drive. That thing was a beast. I remember as a kid helping my dad cut wood and having a cord of oak in the box. He rigged up sides to make it hold it. Thats about three ton in the box. Also i remember one of my dads Friends with his early 70's ford 3/4ton . Four speed with a 390. That thing sounded so awesome. It was a cool truck. Not sure what instigated it but i will never forget when they chained up. Automatic is the only way to go when your trying to pull. This is no ****. After they both sat there and dug a hole, my dads pickup took off. This is no ****, it shifted into second gear and it was pulling.

Re: 350 vs 390

390's were not so common in the Fords...The 360 was. The last year for the "FE" was in 1976. If I remember right, the pistons sat down in the hole more than .080! and compression was like 7.8:1, and the timing set was retarded 4* from the factory..they were in no way competition for a 350 of the same era.

Re: 350 vs 390

My only experience with a 390 was in a '67 LTD. It was a total pig. Going down the road and mashing the gas, the only result would be more noise on the downshift. I think my 4 cylinder Malibu DD would smoke it.

a lot depends on condition of drive train, tires, gear ratios, etc. the battle of Chevy VS Ford will go on forever.

Re: 350 vs 390

I never saw hooking trucks up as proving anything about the trucks, just the drivers. I had guys want to do it but I turned them down saying I had nothing to prove. I've even had them want to fight because I refused,I said I had nothing to prove there either.

the heavier trucks will always win. there used to be video on yt of a 600 hp diesel truck vs a old deuce and a half. the deuce with 60 hp won.

Re: 350 vs 390

Another reminder to not post after drinking but i'll finish. I have a 428 in my garage. The distributor in the front is nice among other things. Ford fe's are great engines. But it is definitely about putting the power to the ground. My dad won the pull because he had an automatic and better tires. Among other reasons. Big block doesn't guaretee anything. Every last person at that party bet on the ford to win. It was a dumb thread for me to start

Lots of power and no traction makes jack a dull boy.
You should see the looks i get pulling a trailer with 2 tons of rock uphill in an IH travelall thats 4" off the ground. Priceless

Re: 350 vs 390

It's all good. I haven't been around the "hook 'em up" crowd for years. But I remember it well. This was the second half of the '70s. I just never went for it. Lots of guys who had just gone out and bought their first 4wd thinking they could pull a house down. Usually ended up with a rear,or other weak point in the drivetrain, repair bill to accompany their monthly payments. Lots of ripped off bumpers because they didn't know how to hook up to a truck right (yet). Lots of alcohol too. Back in the day my Dodge threatened a lot of guys and the funny thing is I was a mellowed out hippy zen surfer boy and could care less. I just liked my truck to be tuff as can be. It helped it along when I spun a bearing in the wide block 318 and all I could seem to find to replace it with was a police interceptor 440. You see,Dodges are harder to find parts for. That's how I got stuck on GMs

I hope you don't mind me having fun with hijacking your thread by talking about the Blue Mule. That's what people called it. Maybe we could turn this into a show your truck people wanted to pull from back in the day thread

Re: 350 vs 390

I will say it again, CHEVROLET is the only company that consistently made sexy looking trucks and Cars... The trucks... ALL THE WAY TO THE 50's 5 window through the 80s squarebodys. The cars, you have the CHEVELLES, NOVA, CAMAROS, MONTE CARLOS ETC...

FORD, with the exception of the 70s model trucks, they were cool looking trucks and probably the better looking trucks today, but as far as the cars, if it weren't for the MUSTANGS... NAAAA no competion ...

MOPAR, king of the muscle cars. All though I love the B body's from the late 60s, ROADRUNNERS, CHARGERS, CHALLENGERS, CUDAS etc.... AWSOME CARS, The dodge truck never looked good untill the recent years ....

Re: 350 vs 390

forgot one. to say the 70s ford torinos and ltds didnt look good is crazy and oh lord not the mopar king of the muscle cars thing even though gm invented them. if anything mopar played catch up. until 68 they werent even in the game and even then copied gm and fords stylin from the years past. they had to paint them bright colors like orange and purple to get ppl to notice them. oh and a challenger cuda mustang camaro is not a muscle car. pony car is different. midsize car with a hipo engine is a muscle car.

Re: 350 vs 390

Special k. I don't mind at all. I think those old dodge pickups are ugly but ugly in a good way. Now i want one. Dodge owns the diesal pickup market hands down with newer pickups. I could see the old dodge pickups becoming more popular in the next ten year's. My opionion is based off of my own boredom and this case of beer. Godspeed

Re: 350 vs 390

i loled at this last post. but i agree i can see those old dodges being popular cause there different. things are already like this in the muscle car market. ppl get tired of the run of the mill camaro stang chevelle or mopar. now amcs buicks mercurys and odd ball cars are getting all the attention.

Re: 350 vs 390

i would take any of the cars he posted honestly. granted id want to fix them up somewhat with nice wheels no campers and paint for the yellow luv but they all are cool cars to me. id rather have the impala than a mopar car for the most part. i just like older cars. they killed the cars in 90s everything became plastic and fwd.

Re: 350 vs 390

I'm having fun talking about cars. Its important that people buy what they like and not worry about what other people like. The other day i found a 72 k10 lwb that's two tone blue and white. The most gorgeous looking pickup i've ever seen. $8000. I like my 72 but its not quite what i want. Just buy what makes you happy. Don't worry about what other people think of it. Godspeed

yeah i agree. brand loyalty is another thing i dont get with ppl. saying i dont like something cause of its brand alone is kinda close minded.
