67 short fleet resto-mod
Ive been meaning to make a build thread for awhile now and I feel like I'm far along enough with the build that I can start posting pics and not have too long of waits between new pics.
Start with the back story, Ive had this 67 for around 15 years now and although it has gone through some changes and spent some long times dormant I decided 3 or so years ago that I would do a complete frame-off with it and just be done with it. I had done some street rod type mods to it back in the 90s and decided that this time Id go a different route and do a resto mod. My plan was to leave as much stock as possible but the things that made the truck tough to live with on a daily basis or were just plain ugly Id change. I was hoping that when done it would have drivability similar to a modern truck, modern brakes and upgraded steering. a tighter chassis and a quieter cabin, a more highway friendly gearing and modern instruments and stereo. I suppose Ill start the pics with the frame, some of these pics may be out of order but bear with me, if I have pic taken later that better shows the current subject im gonna use it. I first wanted to upgrade to the 68-later integral box type power steering box. I notched a bit out of the frame, welded in a bit of pipe to clear the larger box and made stand offs similar in height to the ones on the 68-later frame. Ignore the time stamps on the pics, I rarely set the time/date on my camera. |

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
Next was on to the frame, Idecided that if I wanted that modern tight ride like a newer truck it would have to be boxed and stiffened. I also wanted the exhaust to tuck up high so I welded a pass-through in the frame rail and made my own trans crossmember.

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
Then suspension, I wanted a adjustable height but didnt want to have to have a compressor or tank so decided that in the front at least, I wanted coilovers. I decided that I would give making a set-up myself a try. I also added front and rear sway bars and a adjustable lower bump stop. I only have few pictures of the the coilover set-up so Im gonna post a link to the old tread I made when I was building the coilover parts.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=266485[/URL]

Glass beaded and and sprayed the heater box with satin clear. Gave the engine a good cleaning and paint, got the exhaust manifolds jet-hot coated and installed a new intake manifold. Cleaned up the frame and re-installed the cab with poly mounts.

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
Heres some shots during color sanding and buffing of the front clip. Got the rad support and inner fender wells powder coated in semi-gloss black and the grille inserts done in anthracite. Gonna keep all the factory trim and badging.

Glad you got a build thread going for this one! The paint looks great. I hope those 1300# coils work out for you.

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
For gauges I wanted something modern but that didn't look out of place in a resto-mod. I used the dakota digital VHX gauges in a new bezel. Heres some shots of the completed bezel, the gauge and fan speed controllers mounted behind the gauges and the sending units. Im very pleased with these gauges as they don't look to race car and are modern stepper motor type gauges with a lot of extra features, really a well thought out quality gauge set.

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
Sound insulation. Dynamat, followed by 2 layers of jute on the floor and foam backed mass loaded vinyl on the firewall, what a difference.

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
For the speaker pods I used the fiberglass resin over fleece attached to a MDF skeleton method. After thickening the walls with kitty hair for vibration resistance and after bodyworking them I painted them with texture spray and covered it with satin clear. Next to black carpet they virtually disappear and powered by a old punch 150 amp they actually sound pretty good considering there is no subwoofer. Head unit is one of those Sony units that opens up and put your Ipod inside.

Re: 67 short fleet resto-mod
Got the gauges directly from Dakota Digital, they are the VHX silver face. Seem kinda pricey at first, but once to start looking into full sweep auto meters with the sending units theyre actually not too bad.
