Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

My brother bought this 68 chevy crew cab today. Need some info on it. The front is off a blazer right now and the bed has been changed. The story is the guy my brother bought it from said that the original owner wanted two crew cab trucks in 1968 and contacted GM. GM told him to contact a guy in Mississippi. So he did and had two trucks built. Anyone know anything about this builder?

It's not a suburban look at the roof.

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

So we found out more about the crew cab. My brother contacted the guy that was the previous owner before he sold it 10 years ago. He said that he purchased it in the 80's and it was missing the bed and the front end. I guess the last guy was miss informed about a builder in Mississippi. He is not sure where the truck came from. He thinks it may have been an navy or coast guard truck but not sure. Any ideas of the builder or if it was a prototype?

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

Based on the conversions I know of or have seen I'd say it could be a Stageway Conversion. They did really nice squared cab conversions on Power Wagons. Their eight-door, truck based, airport limos would suggest a four-door pickup would be easy for them.

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

It very likely did start out as a suburban, even if it was built in 1968. The roof line looks a little odd (burbs have high roof lines, trucks have low ones) it looks higher in the front than in the back. It just looks too much like a 'burb to not be one. There was no other way to get the square doors back then.

Does the 4th door on the driver's side actually open?

Very cool truck. Check this one out too:

Looks a bit funky but I like it.

Imagine: a truck of our vintage that you can actually carry more people and junk in.

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

Looks like you have to literally ''reverse engineer'' Door No. 4 out of a donor Door #3.

Actually, out of a door #1 and #2 and fab work.. Then you have to mirror image a pillar to make it swing.

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

I know where there's a 67 Navy Surplus crew in a junkyard. I'll try to get over there and snap a few pics someday, but I'll tell you it has a V between the doors. And before everybody wants me to go buy it, "everything", they have is outrageously priced. But just for giggles, I'll ask if I get the chance. I like this style a lot better.

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

There is a guy in Spokane, Washington that has done a few and they are first rate. Look very factory when he finishes with them. 15K for an unpainted finished cab only. Lot of money, but there is a lot of work involved.

Was there any info to go with those pics you found Trevor?

I agree with the others, that's the best looking 4 door 67-72 I've seen.

Re: Need info on 68 chevy crew cab

The truck Trevor posted was the family truck purchased new in 1968 or 1969 and remained in the family til around 1978. If memory serves me correctly and still looking for a picture of it in two door form. Purchased from Midway Chevrolet just north of Van Buren on Grand Ave. in Phoenix, Az.

The City of Phoenix had a number of these trucks used in daily operations throughout the valley and believe that is where my father got the idea, just do not remember who modified the truck, but hey I was in third grade and do remember alot so far.

I have posted another picture and I think it came with 16.5 split rims and if you look at some of the pictures posted my father them replaced with a 8" or 10" wide wheel with a Cooper tire, real wide ones.

Now comes the fun part of this site, reminiscing about some of the trucks that family or friends had while I was growing up.

My sister owned the two following trucks, the first was the 1962 and her first vehicle

1962 C10 short bed with a 235 L6 three on the tree til it was converted to the floor and the BIG rear window.

The second was a 1972 C10 4x4 350 cu. with the 4 speed granny, I loved that truck but she would rarely if ever let me drive it like I did her 1962...

A friend of ours Kevin worked at wrecking yards and was always switching vehicles, several notables.

1965 Carryall/Surburban he eventually put a 396 in it but with the 4 speed granny transmission was kinda of slug

He also owned a 1964 GMC shortbed stepside with the godawful looking hood.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...419525&page=19

One other notable was a 1960? GMC 1/2ton truck long bed with the boat anchor of a v6 motor, that thing was like the energizer bunny, it just kept going.

Take a look at the pictures I believe the wheels were a split rim, ya I'm one of the little terrors in the picture and my two older brothers and a cousin from Nebraska. I'm the one in the middle on my Schwinn..

You guys have room for my Elephant, had her for around 20 years..

Mike
