Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
So I was wanting to get some people who are better at math than me and figure something out for me. What's a cheaper way to get my truck: driving from San Diego to Arcadia (132 miles; just outside of Pasadena) with a friend to drive my car back it is a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix that gets about 22mpg and me to drive the truck back or flying up there and driving back? Or are there any other options?

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
If it were my Choice, I would drive up & Drive the Truck Back, 132 Mile's is a Good Shake Down Cruize to get the Feel of the Truck..............
Either way Good Luck & Hurry Home.............. Rick

I would roll with a partner. If you end up on the side of the road, he can drag you to a safe spot and you'll have a ride to the parts store... or if real bad, a ride home.

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
Before you go I would sign up for triple A...this comes with three free tows of 100 hundred miles...so if it makes it atleast 32 miles you are home free.

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
132miles divided by 22 mpg = 6 gallons.
6 gallons times 4.50 per gallon = $27 each way for the car for a total of $54. cost of fuel in the truck not included since it will be the same nomatter the way you choose to go get it. I doubt you can fly for less then $54.00

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
I'd just take the drive, Tony.
It's only 132 miles. And it would be much more comforting to have a "chase" car with a tool box if you had problems.

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
Figure that you will spend $54 for gas for the car. You mention the price of gas. Figure if gas was $3.00 a gallon and the total for the car would be $36, so only $18 more now that gas is so "high", so skip a trip to the movie theater and youll be fine.

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
yeah that's not going to be near as bad as I thought especially cause when I get back it's getting the 100k service, air filter changed and oil changed...should be getting about 27 at that point cause last time I changed the air filter before I went to vegas and it was getting 27mpg on the way there

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
Hey brother, 1st - congrats on getting the truck back with you! We all hate it when they're not here to tinker on.
2nd - To fly from San Diego to LA is more than $100, then you have to get to Pasadena (a long haul). Another option is Amtrak. Take the Coaster up to Oceanside and catch the Amtrak to LA Grand Central, then change trains to Pasadena. You may qualify for a military discount and can take a small toolbox with you. I've taken the train for (I think) $20.00 one way. Check www.amtrak.com for times and cost. If you have a buddy with a truck/hitch, you can rent a trailer from U-haul or comparable and not worry about breaking down. OR- Make friends with a tree hugger if you can stand riding in Pusss-rius and have them take you....no, on second thought, it's too embarrassing. Don't befriend prius drivers! Just tell them to get out of the fast lane! In California Triple-A only covers the 1st seven miles free unless it's a bike or RV. So don't plan on having it hauled home. I bought my truck from a Marine in San Diego and it needed a tranny and ignition to even move, so we called a tow truck to have it brought right to the house and paid the towing. After some wiring and ignition work I called AAA to have it hauled to the transmission shop. Freebie. Good Luck. PM me if I can help. Dave

if you're worried about the cost of such a short trip to pick it up,i hate to hear you if you attempt regular usage of it

Re: Cost Of Getting My Truck When I Get Back?
I agree with cdowns.
What if the Grand Prix breaks down ? It could go either way. These trucks are too fun to drive to worry about gas mileage. If we were overseas we would be paying 7-8 dollars a liter. 4 liters to one gallon do the math. Its not that bad. Drive that truck and drive it fast !
