Exhaust!

Okay I got a 69 c10 with a 305 V8. I got a flowmaster 40 series. But I want some more sound. Its just a little quite..really quite actually. you cant really hear it at all. So I need muffler/glasspack ideas for a good sounding exhaust. I dont want it to sound like I should be at the circle track or drag strip but I want to be able to hear it when I get on it. and just idleing.

Re: Exhaust!

Well glasspacks will do it for sure my 72 with a 305 has them (not sure what brand they were there when I bought the truck) and it's always noticeable.

Sounds like a good argument to get a new motor past the boss.

Once upon a time I had a 93 tbi 305 that had longtube headers true duels with a xpipe and 40 series flowmasters and never heard anyone say anything bad about how it sounded

Re: Exhaust!

maybe cheaper to keep the 40's except go with larger pipes on the outlet side of the muffler, do turn downs in front of the axle

Re: Exhaust!

Before you do anything, tell us some more about the engine and the current exhaust setup. Flowmaster 40's are pretty loud mufflers, so if they're too quiet, there may be a reason for that.

I had an 86 with a 305 and it just wouldn't get loud at all due to low cylinder pressure. Cylinder pressure is what makes most of the noise. The design of the muffler just tones the sound. so, in a way, cdowns is right about a new motor.

Let us know what you have now, and we'll see if we can figure out how to answer your question.

Re: Exhaust!

How about a set of QTP dumps?

http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/index.php

If the old motor is weak, then the performance and sound is down. "And" No you do not have to purchase a $5000.00 motor for sound. My son's truck has a GM replacement 350 under his hood, with a change in the cam and a set of headers---It is as loud as my stroker engine, any day. Those engines run a lot less than a $5000.00 bill.

I had a set of Flowmasters on my 84 and it was loud, when you wanted it to be. I ran my pipes to the rear of the truck to make it less of a hassle in the cab. However,he Flowmasters rusted out and I now have a set of Magnaflows in their place. Still can get throaty when I get into it.

What DO you have for an exhaust system. If you are running the factory exhaust manifolds, then there is one restriction that will hamper performance and sound. Headers will make that better. Also, do you have ANY resonators still in your system, they take away sound issues.

Its a 305 from a 79 with about 140,000 on it. Right now..it has the stock manifolds straight to a flowmaster 40 single out the back. Just got a new carb. just a 2 barrel replacement. Stock all the way pretty much.

The stock manifolds and the single exhaust pipe is killing you. Look at running a true dual system, with a "X" or "H" pipe At teh tranny and then put 2 1/2" pipes max to where you want them to dump. I suggest to the rear end to get the loud noise out of your cab. I would also look at a set of decent headers for better flow. Just a suggtestion.

Re: Exhaust!

flowmaster 40 series are not a quiet muffler. I believe if you go with glasspacks it may get a little louder, not much though. In my opinion glasspacks sound like garbage. I would invest in a set of headers and run a dual system with flowmasters. That would liven the sound up quite a bit.

Re: Exhaust!

Do headers with dual 40's and an x-pipe. A 4 barrel carb will make it louder too..

Not sure I follow that... how will a 4bbl make a stock engine louder?

Anyhoo... you have single (restrictive) exhaust.

Set up duals (with or without a crosspipe) and the 40 series flowmasters... it will be louder than the cruddy glasspacks.

I was thinkin' the same thing until I re-read his post... I think his point is that headers, dual exhaust and a larger carb would theoretically allow the engine to breathe better thus allowing it to make more power and sound healthier....

Of course its a smogger 305 with puny valves, poor heads and a cam best suited as a paper weight.... so it will never be mean, but could sound that way with the right upgrades.

To the OP, I ran a single 20" glasspack behind Screamin's 307 for years and she sounded great.... Nuthin' like the 3" single I have now behind a built 355 though.

Re: Exhaust!

Ponder this until the current exhaust rusts out. By this point you should be in your late 20's and no longer think "loud" is quite as cool... and you get to save some time and money that could be spent on bettering the trucks performance.

I've spent a TON of time and money trying to get my trucks to sound nice but not be loud and drone on the road and not strangle performance.

Now, this is my OPINION, but best to be fast and quiet than slow and loud...

Edit:

Your truck is a '69? Have you done disc brake conversion yet? Brakes are by far the most important part of any vehicle, and drum brakes SUCK. You really put yourself at a disadvantage to every other vehicle on the road when you are out with 4 wheel drums. Spend money here first.

Never meant to come across lookin for a loud truck. Just want some nice sounding exhaust. I know what ya mean on the breaks.

Thanks for the input and ideas everyone!

Re: Exhaust!

If you want lots of noise and very low cost just stick a 3" pipe out right behind each front tire.

I like Cherry Bomb glass packs too.

Re: Exhaust!

40 series are 2 chambers i think... as far as i understand the more chambers the quieter the exhaust, go find some flowmaster 1 chamber mufflers.

Re: Exhaust!

My 68 had headers, and 2 1/2" 40 series Flowmasters with turndowns that dumped in front of the rear axle. It was very loud and would wake the neighbors up. The 72 Custom deluxe i just bought has stock rams horns manifolds, 2"or2 1/4" exhaust pipe, 40 series flowmasters, and tailpipes that dump behind the rear wheels. It has a good sound but is not loud enough at all for me. Both the trucks are leaf spring so i'm thinking about taking the complete exhaust off the 68, [it burned up in a garage fire], and putting it on the 72. Anyway, your mufflers are fine, just put some headers on it and dump the exhaust in front of the rear axle. Joseph
