Steering Gear Tools
Hey, i need some help trying to find out a tool to take apart my steering gear. On the input shaft theres a retainer and sorta like a nut holding the retainer, the retainer has 2 holes wich i think there should be a socket or something to loosen this thing up cause i tried pretty much everything:
-tried to hit the nut on the side with a screw driver and hammer -put the nut on a vise and twisted it -even tried a huge crescent wrench and a stillson but nothing If more info is neded just holler, thanks.

Its been so long since I did mine. Are you tring to take the nut with the two holes off? You will need a "spanner" wrench if so.

Are these to holes close together.IIRC the fastener you are trying to get off is a snap ring.If so and you have never dealt with one,you are in for a treat.Clean it good and look.If it is a ring around a grove in the "lip" with two holes it is spring loaded and requires snap ring pliers.Don't ask where to get a good set of snap ring pliers,I've been a mechanic for 35 years and have never seen a "good" pair.I have seen new snap ons but never a good pair.

that nut with the 2 holes is a adjusting nut for the input shaft. you need to first remove the big stamped metal nut. try using a big channel locks and it is right hand thread, nothing special. they are tight. then you will need a spanner wrench for the adj. nut which is also RHT.
what's wrong with your box? leaks or wear? |

I got a pic from american classic, the exact same pump 4WD, 3/4" input shaft, 30 splines. The holes im talking about are circled on red.
And yeah, its leaking bad, even when is not in use the fluid just pours out. Now, does the stamped nut loosen clockwise or counter-clockwise if ur looking the input shaft from the front? Thanks.

I would get one from a parts store rebuiling one is a pta.I have seen them as low as $150

Looking down on the shaft you turn it counterclock wise. You can start thr nut with a dull chisel & hammer, then remove it with big pliers. You can remove the plug with a spanner wrench but needle nose pliers will work. You need to mark everything with a center punch so you can retain the adjustment. After you get the plug out remove the snap ring & the 2 seals. Some guys remove the snap ring & dig the seals out without pulling it out but you can do a better job takeing it out.

Oh i see, so anyone knows where to get this spanner wrench other than ebay and anyone could tell me wich trucks come with this gear box with a 3/4 input shaft cause it seems that every parts store can only get the 13/16. Just in case things get ugly. Im gonna have to get a wrench bigger than my 24" crescent and see what happens.
