NV4500 Parts needed!
I just discovered I need a input shaft for a 96+ NV4500 transmission.
It needs to be Chevy 10 spline and I could use the front bearing retainer also. (Internal clutch slave cylinder style). And I could use a shifter also. Need the old style with the round retainer ring. I know it's a long shot but it can't hurt to ask. LMK what ya have.. PS, I will have some Dodge style NV4500 parts for sale soon....

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
Good luck to ya.In your search,if you come across a case,I`ll take it.Do you know where the cases changed?I bought mine (crate unit) for a`95 from GM in`02.Could they have sold me a newer unit?I`ll get #s and look into it.It`s not at my house.

They changed the bellhousing to transmission bolt pattern from 96+, (92-95 were the same), and also the front bearing retainer is larger diameter on the 96+. The bearing is the same, just the retainer is bigger. I'm assuming since you bought one for a 95 you need the older style case. It very possible you got a newer style since 95/96 were the transition years. If that's the case, I just sold the case, (complete trans actually), you need. I sold my 2wd Chevy NV and bought what was supposed to be a 4x4 version NV. Turns out it's a Dodge 4x4 trans... I bought it from a friend but he had no idea it was a Dodge unit and I looked at it a few times but it didn't soak through until I was unloading it the other night. DUH..! (The newer 96+ Chevy transmissions share the bellhousing to trans bolt pattern and bearing retainer diameter with the Dodge units.) I scored an Chevy 4x4 output shaft on ebay the other night so now I just need the input and bearing retainer. If I run across a case I'll sure let you know.

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
454,
I believe the input and retainer are available from Advanced Adapters for about $100 or so. That may be for the earlier trans tho for a regular T/O bearing. As to the earlier B/H bolt pattern, I have an earlier trans but the pad is there for the later GM holes. Dodge always had the same bolt spacing as the late GM so it just depended on where New Venture drilled the holes in the case. I may be interested in your Dodge input shaft and other Dodge 4500 parts. I am rounding up parts to put a Cummins diesel in my 3/4T 4x4. Been the 6.2 route, w & w/o Banks turbo, and am back to a 350 again. Virgil |

What year 4x4 are ya puttin the Cummins in? That will be an interesting setup. The Cummins is probably a much better direction to go than a gas big block but I just can't bring myself to deal with diesels yet. I should have all my Dodge NV4500 parts up for sale soon. I'll have the input and output shafts, front bearing retainer, and the rear transmission housing. I have no clue what they're worth but we can probably work out something. Thanks PS, I still need a shifter! Anybody?

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
The truck is an 82 3/4T 4x4. I'm BBC poor, (only have 7 of them) but am getting away from them. Will keep one for my 67 Camaro, and probably a spare for my brother as he has a 454 in his 3/4T 4x4.
I am running my 4500 already, so all I will need to change is the front side of the trans, input, B/H, etc. Virgil |

How did you install the 4500? IE, what bellhousing, transfer case, adapter kit, etc? Did it make any difference in fuel mileage? I suppose alot of the fuel mileage still depends on your engine build and gearing/tires/use, but I gotta ask.

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
Wish we wasn't so far apart, I would just trade you the GM trans for the Dodge one.
I replaced a 465 4 spd w/ the 4500. they are the same length. It is the earlier GM trans, but the gears are the same as the 465 but w/ OD. I used the bellhousing that came with the trans, but there is plenty of meat in the case to drill it to the late GM/Dodge pattern. The 81 up, 4spd 208 case (and I think the earlier thm400 case) match the output shaft of the 4500. I did have to build a 3" spacer to go on the trans mount. The shifter is farther to the rear than the 465, but I just cut the floorpan offset, turned the piece around and rewelded it back in, bolted the shift boot and all back in. If you couldn't see the welds, you would think it was a factory job. I'm getting somewhat better mileage, but the current 350 is worn out, the reason I am rounding up Cummins parts. I have 3.73s and 33s. It does alright running around, but when I hook up the trailer, and load my tractor, etc, well, let's just say the motor is weak...... Virgil |

Did you use the 208 transfer case? I just got some new information, (Updated NV4500 installation manual from Advance Adapters that came with my adapter kit), about mating a NV4500 with a NP205 transfer case. The way I read it is, if you have a Chevy version NV4500 and a 85-91 NP205, (Round mounting pattern/32 spline long female input shaft) you can swap in the short 32 spline female input shaft from an older, (79-84), TH400 style NP205 and they should bolt together without the need for an adapter of any kind. I may not be understanding their wording completely though. It's on page 37 if you've got a new AA NV4500 installation manual. Quote:
I couldn't stand the big tall shifter over on the passenger side of the trans hump so I heated it up and bent an Z curve in it so it comes through the trans hump on the drivers side and it's only about 8 inches tall now. I cut the trans hump pan the same way you described and reversed the piece, welded it back in. Sounds like I may be doing the same thing again for the trans shifter. Update of my situation; I finally got my AA adapter kit to mate the NV4500 to my NP205 transfer case but I still need a Chevy style input shaft, a shifter and now I find out I also need a different 5th gear for the mainshaft, (Cummins mainshaft 5th gear is a different spline count than Dodge gas/Chevy mainshaft 5th gear). I've found a place I can order these parts new, fairly reasonable but if anybody has 'em used my budget would rather go that route. hahaha.

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
Thanks for the info.I didn`t change the bellhousing,so....older-type.I only have about 15,000miles on this crate tranny. The truck got t-boned/totalled and the bellhousing and upper/left ear of the mating surface busted out on the trans. So I need both the case and bellhousing.Would the cases be interchangeble as long as both the case and bellhousing matched?

The cases are interchangable with, (like you stated), the matching bellhousing, but the newer, (96+), used the internal slave/throwout bearing where the 95-older used the external slave cylinder mounted under the starter on the right side. I think I have everything I need except the shifter now! Anybody??? 44th Miss Inf, I know there's a difference between the diesel and gas dodge inputs, How do I tell which one I have?

I think the Dodge diesel input shaft is 1 1/4 where the gas is 1 1/8 (same OD as the GM shafts)

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
Sorry for the late reply. Yes I used my 208 case. Actually, I may have a line on another Chevy 4500 from a wrecked 4X4 truck. Will see what pans out. Also, I if you do find everything, I still may be interested in the Dodge parts.
I haven't been to Missouri since leaving Fort L'Wood in 1990. Never know, for a trade, I have been as far as OK & KY. Virgil |

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
I'm in Liberty, MS zip 39645 (it is about 1 hr north of Baton Rouge, LA) I think the Didge trans takes a different shifter, but I could be wrong.
I am at work in Brazil at the moment and won't be home until next Friday. Will make some calls when I get home to see if I can round up a shifter. Virgil |

The Dodge shifter is the same internally as the Chevy, but I've been told it has different threads for the shifter handle. Chevy and Dodge both used both kinds, (push/twist and bolt on), shifters. As for the Dodge with a 205. I haven't verified that Dodge ever used the NV4500 coupled with the 205. If they did, that would definately be the way to go for a Cummins conversion. Dodge is still passenger side drop transfer cases, correct? (Shows how much I look at Dodges!! LOL) I'll email ya. If/when ya find out about a shifter let me know. I'm gonna try car-part.com just for curiosity.

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
454,
Had another thought. Would it be easier to find a Dodge 205 case to mate to the trans to save from getting another adapter? The reason I ask is, I made an offer on a whole truck - a 93 Dodge 4x4 1 ton w/ Cummins & 5 spd, and a busted rear. Not sure yet if the trans is a G360 or 4500, but the truck has a right hand drop 205 case, and if I pick it up, I had thought about just putting motor, trans and case in my truck. If you want, email me at virgilroberts@hotmail.com and we can discuss this further. I am able to check email more often than the message boards. Virgil |

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
Virgil, that truck has the getrag 360 in it. When they switched to the nv4500, they also switched to the 241. There could be a combination of factory adapters to do it, as I know others have.

454,
Where are you getting 4500 parts? If I use my 4500 with a Cummins, will probably replace a few other parts in it and am looking for a good source. Stelth2002, thanks for the information. I'm not real up to date on the Dodges, as most of what I have learned about them is from researching for the Cummins swap. Virgil |

The only thing I didn't like is that you have to call them to order parts, (no online orders), but then again, I had some questions to ask about the parts anyway so it wasn't a wasted call. They have a used parts list also, but like always, they didn't have the parts I needed in the used section. I'm gonna try to order my parts next week.

Re: NV4500 Parts needed!
454,
I have a few places earmarked on my home computer that sell parts. Haven't seen this one, so I can't tell you of price differences) Also, did you ever figure out if your Dodge input shaft is a diesel or gas? My brother emailed and may have found me a rebuilt, no miles late Chevy 4x4 4500, with the Cummins input shaft, from an uncompleted project. (No bell housing, etc, just trans) Any idea what would be a good price to offer? (haven't really searched for rebuilt tranmissions, always looked for parts) If I score this, may pull and sell mine to help offset cost. What is the going price for a 93 6.5TD 4x4 4500? (app 75K miles total) |
