I have a HEI conversion question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am going to convert over to HEI this weekend, weather permiting, on my '68 250. I have carefully read Shifty's FAQ on the matter, which is awesome, BTW, http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=148346 but it left me with one question-What happens to the wire that is currently going to the coil? Does it just cut and cap or does it need to go somewhere else?

If you reread shifty's thread he removed the wire and replaced it with the new one that runs to the terminal block on the firewall.I used the instructions he gave also.I can tell you that I spent more time gathering parts than putting it in.I think the actual conversion took about 30-45 min including ahanging plugs.It probably took a couple of hours or so to gather parts.
You need to have
1.Plug wires
2.The dist
3.the wire connector(shifty gives the part #)
4.Plugs or a at least regap
5. wire I like 12 guage.

Just FYI I've been told that the standard HEI with the large cap will not work with AC because there isn't enough clearance.The divorced HEI (with seperate coil) supposedly does.

really? I just dropped one in a couple of weeks ago and it fits perfectly....

V8 400 w/ AC HEI with internal coil fit with no problem.

That's the wire coming off the starter-I was talking about the wire that is connected to my existing coil. BIGKEV says just dead end it.

Thanks, guys. I got started on it today, but just like always I had to take a few sideways steps. I pretty much got everything done except for changing that wire-I have all the proper connectors. I passed by the big NAPA in Salt Lake and they had those funny connectors, so I got 3 of them. 1 to break, 1 to lose and one to make my truck run!

I wanted to bend me up a new fuel line while I was at it-more of a pattern/practice run to see how long of a piece of tube I'll need for the final line.

If it's not raining tomorrow like they said it's gonna, I'll get 'er done.

oh, its a v6. sorry, should have read that slower. that sure is a funny place to put the distributor!
