PO painted over SPID. Ideas?
PO painted over the SPID on my Blazer. Anybody ever successfully overcome this? Any tricks to carefully remove paint without trashing the SPID?

Depends a lot on how well covered it is and with what. Sometimes you can clean it a enough to duplicate it. Try posting a picture up so we can see it.

If it has the Mylar (clear) sheet over it lacquer thinner will remove the paint easily. If not member Chipflyer can make you a new one.

 Bowhunter is right, acetone. Just use small amounts.

I have done this many times successfully with lacquer thinner as well.

Thanks guys, it worked. Used acetone, didn't try lacquer thinner. Not done yet, bad part is looks like at some point somebody worked hard at trying to scrape it off, but I am able to decipher most of it. Orange was easy, burgundy, somebody put that paint on to stay, she is originally Ochre with a black top! Going to post it over in the blazer section for comments and help.

You are lucky to get that far. My '69 doesn't have the mylar film and it was painted over. Gone forever I'm afraid. I can't figure out a way to get it down to where I can make out even a portion of the lettering.

No mylar film on mine either. Yes, I just went at it real easy swiping at it and changing the rag when it got dirty. I feel like it got clearer after I got it close and stopped wiping. Those labels are pretty tough apparently. Too bad they scraped some away at some point with a screwdriver or something. And cut off the edge of my glove box door to make room for a rollbar. Idiots.

Guys "bubbadize" their guns pretty badly, turning a pristine surplus rifle into a sporter that ends up being worth next to nothing and not very good for hunting.
The same appears to happen to these trucks. Each time I read on here how a lwb is cut down to be a swb I cringe. Yes, it's the owner's right and God bless him but that's one more lwb gone. |
