Question Wheel Question

I purchased a set of American Racing chrome rims for my 70 Chevy C10. They are 6 lug. I took it in to a shop to have some work done on the carburetor and the mechanic says they are not the right size rims. He said that the studs are not long enough. When the lug nuts are on there is not enough tread to secure the wheel on the vehicle and it dangerous. Can anyone offer any advice on this? Is there anything I can check or do to keep from having to change all the studs. I hate to not be able to use the rims but I need to make sure they are secure for the road. If there is nothing I can do with the rims I will have to try and sale them and go back to the steel wheels. Thanks in advance Ron

Re: Wheel Question

Maybe spacers with longer studs? Picture is for illustration only, make sure to do your homework and buy the right ones for your truck.

Re: Wheel Question

studs are cheap , you can change them out in your driveway or have your mechanic do it .

Not much of a mechanic if he released your vehicle back to you knowing it was unsafe to operate on the road.
In my part of the world his licence is at stake and he would be held responsible if a liability occurred.

For a closed lugnut you want it to engage the threads 1 1/2 times the width. For a 1/2 inch stud you need 3/4 inch of attachment.
A 7/16 inch would be about 5/8 inch.
Check them yourself.
Maybe your studs are ok but you need longer shank lugnuts.

Re: Wheel Question

Post a pic of your wheels then a pic of your wheel in place on the truck. Maybe we can better help figure out what you need. Replacing studs is no big deal if thats all it needs. You said chrome wheels so we can assume they are steel?

Re: Wheel Question

So are there lugs that I can get that will offer more contact with treads and be safe to drive. I like the rims and I don't want to have to replace all 24 studs. Like someone said I could go back to the original steels. I do have them but would need to get them sandblasted and painted. I just want it to be safe! Thanks to all. I'm new to the site and trying to learn as I go on things.

Re: Wheel Question

Those wheels would look good if they were nicely polished. That said, I wouldn't drive that truck around the block with so few threads holding the wheels on. As Grumpy and others said above, just get longer studs.

Re: Wheel Question

If you are up to the task, you can find new studs here. Be careful with what you have, I would recommend changing back to the steel wheels if you still have them, and then look at getting new longer studs. If you are not up to picking the new studs you should definitely get a decent mechanic to help you out. What you have right now is not safe to drive for sure.

Re: Wheel Question

Or get the right lugnuts for your wheels.
If yours look like the ones in this seat type chart on the left, you need to use the ones on the right side of the chart. That will give you plenty of thread engagement.
