66 hubcap ID

Can anyone tell me what this cap came from? I recently picked it up thinking it would work for my 16" Custom Camper 2 piece wheels. However, upon closer inspection it's clear that the ring on the back is different. I thought there were only two types of caps on these trucks.... the 1/2 ton cap without the inner back ring and the 3/4 ton cap with it. Apparently there are other variations.

Please compare the photos below. The correct cap for my 66 Custom Camper (on the left) has a back ring diameter of approx 9.25". This new cap's diameter is approx 8". The back ring is also much more "sunken", if that makes sense. It doesn't protrude as far from the back. It almost appears to be pushed down into the cap somewhat.

Anyone know what this thing fits? Anyone need one?

Re: 66 hubcap ID

Your original obviously fits an eight lug 3/4 ton "clip" type wheel. I think the other flanged hubcap shown fits a six lug 1/2 ton clip wheel. Then there are the "nub" type wheels which take the flangeless hubcaps. Why so many sizes and ways to retain hubcaps I don't know. Factorystock here on the board seems to have it all sorted out though. Do a search for hubcap ID and read his posts. Good luck!

Re: 66 hubcap ID

Sounds like OEM4ME nailed it. I think my mystery cap is for an unknown-to-me-until-today 1/2 ton clip-style wheel (Thanks, Yelmer!). As stated above, sounds like all the 3/4 ton caps have an 8.75" flange opening (inner diameter)... which is approx. 9.25" outer diameter as the photo shows. Learn something new every day!

Re: 66 hubcap ID

Sodley, you CAN still use that cap. The ring inside can be removed and then put your old one in its place. I used a few of those small ring caps for the outer shell on my 3/4 ton 4x4. Takes a little time but could be worth the effort, start on your worst hubcap first though. Jon

Don't throw that 7.5" out! You can modify the 1/2 ton hubcap into a 3/4 ton hubcap with some work. The key is to buy some beat up rough looking painted 8 3/4" inner ring hubcaps for cheap. All you want is the back ring off them. You need to cut them off with a die grinder at the edge. Then JB weld the ring to your nice chrome 7.5" inner ring cap. Do this 4 times for 4 different hubcaps. THe 64 thru 66 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton hubcap has the same physical demensions, its only the back side that is different.

Re: 66 hubcap ID

Sounds sketchy, Factorystock. Have you done this? Would love to see pics. Not sure I'd trust JB Weld to hold my hubcaps on! Yikes!

Re: 66 hubcap ID

It works great, very solid with JB weld. You can also spot weld them in too, but I not sure if the chrome will be effected with the heat. Here is the ring that must be cut off the doner 3/4 ton cap. Then just attach to the 7.5" cap. It can even be done to new reproduction 10 1/4" hubcaps I guess, but I needed the painted caps which aren't reproduced.

Re: 66 hubcap ID

So are you prying up the lip of the new cap all the way around (like 60-66 did )and then gluing the new ring down on top of the existing (smaller) ring... and then folding the edge of the new cap back down over the new ring? Can't tell for sure in the photos. Thanks.

Re: 66 hubcap ID

On my 66 Gold truck all I did was remove the ring from each cap, insert the desired ring and tap the edge back in place, no glue no weld and all parts from either cap are still..................... "factory stock"

No, I did not want to take the risk of damaging any metal on the good hubcap, just JB welded the ring directly to the back. Scaped off painted surface so the bond was clean metal to metal. Very difficult to tell it is not a genuine 3/4 ton cap when complete and has held up very well.

Re: 66 hubcap ID

I learned something today about hubcaps. I bought a set of caps from a fellow board member and got them today. He said that they were from a set of 17" 8 lug clip type wheels from his c20. They are the same as my 16" 8 lug clip type wheels from my c20. They are identical. They look just like the one on the left in sodly's first picture. They are 8 3/4" across the back. My wheels are the 66 split rims.
