What thermostat do i need?

I have an edelbrock performer intake. I need a thermostat. I went to napa and they gave me this thermostat, but it doesnt fit IN the thermostat, the thermo bolts OVER the thermostat. That doesnt seem right... There are little notches on the thermostat housing, i figured the thermo fits in there then bolts down with a gasket. Mr Napa disagrees....

Anyone have a part # for me??? Its a chev 454....

Manifold has depression for t-stat to sit into, housing is flat at mating surface on mark IV BBC. Don't know about later versions.

Thumbs up Re: What thermostat do i need?

Yes the NAPA guy is correct, it does not go into the t stat housing it sets on the block. The newer Chevys go into the housing, some are actually built into it.

Re: What thermostat do i need?

on my performer theres a recessed lip where my t stat sits in, then the gasket goes over, then the housing, mine does not "sit on top" like NAPA says. Your Performer should have the same recessed area in the t stat hole

On my manifold there is NO place for it to set in, its completely flat. the water neck has a recession where the tstat fits into... Michael, do you have a part number for your tstat, or what did you order yours for...?

Then you have a defective intake. Is this a pre 86 motor? It should have a recess the same diameter and thickness as the disc part of the thermostat.

Its an 81 bbc. The intake is a new edelbrock. THere is no idention or anything like that. No lip for a thermo to sit in. The waterneck/thermo housing has a lip that the thermostat sits in. All i need to know is what thermostat. ahaha..

Im just going to bring my waterneck into napa, and have him get me one that fits in the waterneck and problem solved...

Re: What thermostat do i need?

Big block Edelbrock, top, is smooth...small block stock manifold, lower, is stepped. The water neck fits both. I suspect that you might need a different water neck for the big block intake. I thought they were both the same...learn something new every day...LOL! My small block Edelbrock, not shown, has the recess in the manifold just the stock small block manifold.

mine is just a standard, t stat fom auto zone 180 degrees, I got the higher priced one. I just asked for a t stat for a 79 chevy truck(doner truck) 350 motor 4 barrel. I did not mention the performer intake. sorry I dont have the part # though.
