Who owns a 1968 GMC Custom Camper
I know I've asked this question a million times but with so many memebers I'm trying to get a idea of how rare this truck is. Mine is a 1968 custom camper special with a 6.7 396, 3 speed turbo 400 auto trans, 2wd longbed with 3 fuel tanks. Anyone else on this same truck. I've only since one since I've owned it at route 66 in San bernardino Ca in 2002.

Re: Who owns a 1968 GMC Custom Camper
Yes.....actually, I just got rid of one. What was funny about the truck was that they ordered it from the deal WITH a camper on it. The engine compartment had all kinds of relays and the dealer drilled holes in the cab for the connectors. I know this to be true because I still have the dealer paperwork. Mine was a 68 with a 396, TH400 and a 3.54 posi (but GMC called it something else). Mine even had the factory tach dash which is now in my C-10.

Re: Who owns a 1968 GMC Custom Camper
I got rid of it because the body was rusted and beat to piss. It looked like it should be parked out in your favorite pasture. I got rearended in it, got 1,400 from the insurance co, pulled the motor and TH400, pulled the gauge cluster and some other things, and parted the rest for about $900. I came out sweet and now have a '68 SWB that has a 460 BBC, Muncie M-22 and a 12 bolt eaton posi with 3.73's. Can you say SLEEEEEEEPER????

There are no production #'s for GMC's, so its anyones guess. You can find the # of C/20's made, and what you have is slightly less common. Some people say 1 GMC per 5 Chevy, I don't know if that is ideal. I'm guessing there aren't that many out there.

Re: Who owns a 1968 GMC Custom Camper
Got a '68 Chevy Custom. My grandpa bought it in the early 70's with the camper and used it for several years to travel. In '79, he bought a cargo van which my dad converted into a camper for my grandpa (little cheaper on gas than the '68). The '68 is a C20 with a 396, TH400, guages (no tach), factory air.
My dad used the truck for a work truck until he parked it at our farm about 5 years ago. I plan to restore it some time in the future. Just started my own custom woodworking business last September so my priority is getting the business going...may take a few years to get established. Funny thing is, my dad gave me the '79 cargo van/camper which I converted back to a cargo van for my business. I'd love to get the '68 truck running and cleaned up for my business too. Here are a couple of pics of the truck, camper and van. The camper got damaged by vandals in 1984 when our barn got broked into. |

Re: Who owns a 1968 GMC Custom Camper
We`re talking Custom Campers,right?After`72 they were Camper Specials. They didn`t use liters to identify engines, but a 396 is a 6.5L.I had a`68 K2500 CST CustomCamper 50th Anniversary that was loaded. Not the same being 4wd,but rarer than a 2wd.I wish I still had that one.

Re: Who owns a 1968 GMC Custom Camper
Here is my custom camper GMC 68 cab and front clip . I bought it for parts for my Chevy 68 50th .
I bought it for the fenders and doors but then I discovered that the cab is 95 rust free. someone wants to charge me $700 to replace the cab or $300 to repairs the floors and rocker panels on the 68 Chevy. I am leaning towards the repair. |
