engine Supersize Sticky
I want to supersize my truck's engine. I know the knowledge is here. Let's make a post that helps 2wdr, 4wdr, 1/2 ton up, and especially the ones that start with a factory I6 or sbc.I have a nice 70 lwb with factory air + that came with a 350 i'll be glad to post pictures throughout the process.

Re: engine Supersize Sticky
I know that truck didn't come with a caddy motor, but did it come with a big block? I just need to make sure everything fits when I swap mine from a 350 to a 454 cause i'm doing it outside. I have already pulled the old SBC out of the 70 and can steal any parts I need off the 79 like motor mounts. The 79 is in exellent mech shape but a rust bucket so i'll part it out.I also have a good th400 to use but maybe I should just use the th350 for now so I can get it running. I heard the 70 that came with a BBC have a higher hump in the floor so I may be stuck with the th350?

Re: engine Supersize Sticky
You can do it with no special tools (talking about your big block conversion...not the caddy one)
I would look for 72 big block frame mounts for the motor mounts.. they'll be expensive, but they'll fit 100% right. I think the 79 ones are a tad taller. The TH400 will fit with the low floor board, the TH350 woulda been the same. It will be close, and if your cab mounts are trash, then it may not fit... but if they are trashed, you probably want to replace them anyways. Technicly, there is supposed to be a spacer to lift the tailshaft of the tranny an inch or so, but no one uses it. Other than that, maybe some minor wireing issues depending on your alt location verses what was in your truck originally, (passenger side verses drivers side) some exhaust work, a BB fan shroud, and a drive shaft trimming... and you should be in. |
