6cyl Brake Booster
Almost done installing a booster in my 64 with a 230.
Two questions: 1) I was looking for a good vac source. Is everyone just tapping into the one port on the intake under the carb that runs to the PCV? 2) Looks like the stock air cleaner will no longer work. What are some nice alternative options that will clear the booster and MC? Thanks! |

Re: 6cyl Brake Booster
I drilled and tapped the stock manifold before I went with the Offenhauser intake.
I am using the 9" Spectre air cleaner ,(a- zone special). It clears the booster and master nicely. (75 Impala donor) A 1"spacer was installed between the Holley and the Offenhauser and I am using the port on the spacer. How much vacuum do you have?? I found that GM boosters need at least 18" to work properly. I have around 15"hg at idle now and still am not really happy with this set-up. I probably need a collection canister . It is still not as soft a pedal as I had hoped for . I am toying with going to Hydro-boost from a GM diesel or an Astro van. This is working for now

If you need a bigger air cleaner try this.

Re: 6cyl Brake Booster
I cannot find the box for the Spectre 9" air cleaner I am using , but I think it was rated at 600 cfm, that is only a 350cfm Holley 7448 -2 barrel.
I checked out K&N catalog , they make a replacement cleaner which is available in 4" and 6" height. No idea what they would flow, but I would think it would be enough for a inline 6.

Re: 6cyl Brake Booster
Thanks guys! I ended up tapping into the factory pcv line. Not sure how much vac I'm pulling but the brakes are TOO touchy. Way too much boost. The booster is from a '98 1/2 ton chevy. I think I'll move the rod down the pedal are a bit. Wonder if there's a place to source lower vac?
