Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
Gonna take the cab off today and will just have a bare rolling frame with old tires on it. Can or should I even attempt to set this thing on its side, resting on the side of the tires for cleaning, will it even sit or fall over ???, will I bend or wreck any axles or suspension ? Should I leave the rear shocks on so springs won't extend to far ??? Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't see how it would cause an issue if you moved it slowly.

I agree, should be fine if you can get it up somehow. Be sure it is SECURE before working on it

The only real problem I see is the gear oil in the rear end, with it up on its side if the seal aint what it used to be it might leak out out onto your brakes.

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
I did think aout the brake thing, and it needs new brake and axle seals anyway, maybe I should just pull the cover now and drain most of it ? Do you think 3 or 4 guys could lift it ? Thanks.

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
4 guys might be a stretch. Why not a cherry picker on one side and lift it up

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
Sometimes I'm so dense - I have the cherry picker still here that I borrowed to pull the engine - duhh - work smarter not harder - LOL that would be safer too.

Hmm, I wish I had thought of flipping it over before I put the body back on, lol
I guess, I'm pretty much done painting the bottom side anyways, I just do a small stretch every time I'm out in the shop.

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
I actually did the same thing as geezer picture after draining the rearend. Note that geezer kept it hooked up to keep from falling on him.........at least I guess that is what he did. The sucker will fall on you once you put water pressure on it. Clamp a 2x4 to it if you have to so it is braced up.

I've got a fullsize skidsteer that I use for that kind of stuff all the time, cept its big enough to lift the whole truck, not just the frame. However, I absolutely NEVER stand under, or let anyone else stand under a load that I've lifted. Infact, I hate to crawl out of the front, and jump under the bucket to get out of the machine if the bucket is too high to climb onto to get out. I was once lifting a junk cab (relatively light for that machine, it honestly doesn't even feel it) and as I was bouncing along, I lost my boom hydraulic seal, the cab fell down extremely quickly as a result. I had the forks through where the back window once was, and after the boom failed, the bucket crushed the back half of the cab close enough to the ground that I could nearly pound a regular sized nail through it. I can hardly imagine if someone was standing underneith that thing! That, and if I had that thing holding my frame up, and it failed then, you can only imagine the frame damage that'd occur! I guess, he is using a pretty small front loader, but still, the same basic concept should be applied.

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
phantom Dulley.............I'll trade you a truck for a corvette..........better still I'll trad you two trucks for a corvette and you can keep the rack.
I always wondered if those racks would really work in a 8' ceiling shop. Nice incentive to buy to convertibles. Nice Christmas present!!! |

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
My buddy has that exact setup as far as the cars are concerned, not the lift. He has a hot rodded but beautiful conditon 66 convertible and just last week he bought a 97 36000 mile C5. Must be nice is all I have to say. Now as far as the frame goes, I was going to say, well you've got the frame on it's side, the bed on end, so now you've got to put a cab on it's back an take a picture of all 3 peices.

Re: Can you set rolling frame on is side for cleaning/painting ???
Got er did, used engine hoist in the center to lift on side, cleaned that side the reversed and lifted the other side, we had the rear end out, so it was pretty light, heres one of my bad pics again....thats my oldest son ,on his knees, running the pressure washer, he's really good at this, he hates dirt and is on a mission to kill it all -lol.
